Fitting the EGR Cheater

What an EGR Does

Hi wondered what an EGR does and found this:

"EGR Theory. EGR serves one purpose and one purpose only. That purpose is to reduce Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx). Undernormal combustion, Nitrogen(N2)Oxygen (O2) in the air and Hydrocarbons (HC) in the fuel combind into water(H2O) Carbon dioxide (CO2) and the Nitrogen remains unchanged. Under very hot combustion temperatures, the Nitrogen reacts with the other two byproducts and forms Nitrogen oxide (NO). After being released into the atmosphere, it picks up another Oxygen and becomes Nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In the presence of sunlight,
it combines with other compounds like Hydrocarbons and forms Smog. Since exhaust gas is inert (very stable) it doesnt burn again. So by being introduced into
the combustion chamber, it will lower combustion chamber temps enough so that
the Nitrogen doesnt react with the other compounds and is passed unchanged out
the tailpipe thus not contributing to smog. Now, since exhaust gas doesnt burn, it
doesnt exactly help with combustion. At higher RPMs, this really isnt noticable,
but at idle, the reintroduction of exhaust gas will cause a very rough idle and can
cause stalling if to much is introduced into the combustion chamber"

The wonder of the Interweb :)

Quick question. The EGR blanking plate - does that cover the hole where the EGR valve used to be or the hole on the engine where the EGR pipe used to be? (Egr pipe and valve soon to be removed due to 2.4 manifold install).

So what about the hole in the side of the engine when you remove the EGR pipe? Apologies if I'm going over old ground here!

Sorry probably a stupid question but I have recently got the blanking plate from my local dealer, is the cheater only really required to tidy up and get rid of the old valve? If you just use the blanking plate and leave the valve there is that essentially the same result as installing a cheater.

Oh and ps can you use the existing gasket without issue?

Thanks

you can use the original gasket :)

the valve must be bolted over the side of the blanking plate, this is to allow the valve to open and keep the ecu happy

Thanks Vocky, thats what I thought. Will do this for now and when my cheater comes through I will fit that too. My valve is a little rusty so looks puke.. be good to see the end of it cheers..

How can i test the diodes? Fitted the cheater I made and all was well for about 15 miles, then the fan came on permanantly, and about another 3 miles the engine light came on. I'm guessing its a dodgy diode judging by previous responses on here. Chuffed I sealed the whole thing up with araldite now :(

Hi there, I recently made my donation so I can get one of these ERG cheaters but haven't received it as yet. Who is the best person to contact?

Thanks

EGR Cheater on a Vectra 1.8

Hi
I have had all the same problems on my Vectra 1.8 X18XE1 engine. The valve looks the same as the 22SE. Can anybody advise if it will work and or if any changes need to be made. Brilliant fix for a common problem especially if it can be used on other models

there is a possibility it will work, but the wiring is slightly different for non z22se engines, I have no idea why but two pins on the plug wiring need to be swapped :?

the egr cheater was designed for one purpose, to save money.

a duff egr valve is very costly to replace, many people wisely decide to remove the valve before it packs up

the egr cheater is a free gift for donating towards the z22se.co.uk site overheads and is made for no profit what-so-ever.

you can of course make your own if you so wish :)
