Removing and Refitting Head

Hi all,

After my chain snapped, the week before I was due to get it changed, I have managed to source myself a recon'd head complete with new chain and oil jet (moddified one of course).

Will be getting it at the end of October and will be looking to do it myself, so my obvious questions are:

What is involved in the removal of the head?? What tools will I require?? Is there anything to look out for??
I will be encompassing the help of a friend who is good with his hands and knows his way around engines, so I will have some technical advise, but nothing compares to knowledge passed from those in the know..

If anyone in or around Berkshire (Reading) would like to earn plenty of beer tokens I will gladly accept the offer of help as well..

Cheers,
Ross. cheers..

there is also the water pump bolt !

it's easy to undo, just a git to remove once lose, you need to jack the engine up or lower it down to remove it

also worth noting; there is a hex head plug on the cam chain end of the engine, remove it (it's very tight due to thread lock) and inside is the upper chin guide bolt, you can warm the plug up with a hot air gun to make it easier to undo.

take the inlet and exhaust manifold off first, makes removing the other bits easier

Howdy all,

I'll be doing this in the next fortnight, just need to wait for pay day and order the recon'd head which'll come with Modified Oil Jet for the new cam chain kit and head gasket and head bolts.
I'm starting to get all my bits together, so a quick "this is what you'll need" would be very beneficial to me. (parts and consumables)
Also if someone could knock up a quick "How 2" so I can use in conjunction with my Haynes manual (on order) I will be very happy indeed.

Muchos Thankos

10 x head bolts = 90537691 (£1.80 + vat each) £18 + vat
Cam timing chain kit = 12577385 £93 +vat
Crank seal = 90571925 £12 +vat
Timing cover gasket = 24435052 £8 +vat
Crank bolt = 11589123 £3 +vat

if you feel flush, the Balance Shaft Chain Kit = 12576647 £88 +VAT

it's quite straight forward to do, just follow the haynes book, the hardest part is the water pump bolt which requires the engine to be lifted or lowered to allow the removal of the said bolt.
