EDS remap at MPg cheshire

Well chaps, since winning the trophy at our rolling road meet last year at courtenays, Ive been wondering which way forward to go with the tunning. For those who dont know, It made 170bhp with the following mods

Dbilas flowmaster induction kit including the huge air scoop and K&N panel Filter
2.4L intake manifold
Dbilas cast exhaust manifold
2.25" Blueflame exhaust system from the manifold back
200 cell HJS motorsport cat (No EML's) no pre cat.
Piper fast road cams
Fuel Pressure regulator operating from atmospheric pressure
Standard managment and standard map.

Well, since then, I had an issue with the exhaust center section failing, in fact It was failing whilst on the RR, so by the same rule applied to others, I would have probably made more than 170bhp, lol. Anyway, I had a new box welded in under warente, but that one failed soon after too. It apeared the car might be fueling incorectly, and with the dbilas manifold and good quality sports cat not holding the heat back like the standard equipment, I was melting the perf tube in the center secion. Worried what other implications this may have I removed the 2.4 mainfold and refitted the original before Blueflame made me a complete new exhaust from 2.5" stainless with a diffrent design center box, and its been sweet since. (And pleasently quiet for a 2.5" system).

Exhaust sorted, Ive been reluctant to refit the 2.4 maifold because having driven 2000miles across all of germany with it fitted, including the nurbugring, I got quite used to how it behaved, and when I refitted the 2.2 manifold I was plesantly surprised how much more torque, and drivable the car was. Yes, the peak power was ever so slightly down, but the general performance was improved, so I've decided to leave the standard 2.2 unit fitted.

Having got everything reliable and running right, I decided not to go much further with the already high spec on the engine, barring maybe a lightweight flywheel, so It was time for a remap.

Now Ive heard the problems with the likes of chipped uk, and the maps not sticking, so they're out the window, which narrowed it down to the likes of TMS, Courtenay or Regal. A few phone calls to TMS and Courtenay didnt exactly inspire confidance (both superchips dealers I think), perticually the price for a map to suit the cams. So I spoke to Chris from regal who does the EDS softwear when I was at PV this year, and for the first time I got some good answers.

I deliberated a little longer and before I knew it, my mate Ian at MPg in cheshire also started doing the EDS remaps, and then a few weeks ago, they cracked the softwear so they can remap the car over the tech 2 port rather than having to programme the eprom directly off the board. Along came MPg's open day (Which I did advertise on here!) and I took the offer of a custom EDS remap for 25% off, £221 all in. 8)

EDS and Arno being prety much regarded as the Tuning GOD by the zlet lads, I figured I couldnt go far wrong and boy am I pleased I had it done. We uploaded the map off the car to Arno the wednesday before the open day and left it with him with a list of the fitted hardware. A few days and phone calls later to get the cam specs from piper (or one of his "contacts"), and the softwear arived back on sunday, downloaded to the car, and off I went one very happy chappy.

WHAT A DIFFERANCE!!!! before and after was like chalk and cheese. Having told Sarah to take it for a spin herself she put her foot down and her words where "F**kin Hell" :D The throttle responce is much better, the engine runs far smoother, It just pulls harder everywhere, and really picks up when it comes on cam, all the way to the new 7250rpm rev limmit, that to be honest, I still havnt dared hit. well, you dont need to! shift up and it just keeps going. Thats another great thing I've noticed, on the standard map, when you change gear, the power dosent come straight back, it would bog down very slightly, clear itself and pick up again, granted only breifly but it was noticable, however, after the re-map its just ready and rareing. I could go on for ages, but you get the idea, i'm very impressed.

After speaking with Ian I found out the softwear is based on the EDS phase 2 map, (for details click here!) tweaked to suit the piper cams.

The softwear is available from MPg for £295 and can be customised to suit your modifications, but they will NOT map anything with the 2.4 manifold. I dont think EDS regard it as a safe modification?

cant wait to go to work tonight, another excusee for a drive! Mwahahaha,

hope this review is of use,

Adam.

fitting an improved inlet manifold isn't safe WTF :?

that doesn't inspire confidence in their tuning ability

I'm speculating that they just havent developed a package for the 2.4mainfold yet, just like courtneys havent, even though they supplied them

When I say not safe, I know of someone fitting a 2.4 mainfold that already had an EDS map on there car and melted their engine. That shows two things, the EDS map obviously actually makes a difference to the fuel and timming and tunes the car close to its optimum whilst remaing safe, and that the 2.4 manifold has the ability to flow more air, causing the engine to run lean, with potential for serious damage. They are a buissness and have a duty of care and reputation not to damage your car, so are being cautious and are curently not offerning softwear for that hardwear. Will they ever produce a map for it? good question, but why havent courtneys?

So whilst the 2.4 manifold shifts the power band up the rev range, and I'd say undoubtably improves air flow, weather its a good modification is still up for debate, with most people finding the price to pay is a loss of torque, I guess it depends what it is you want from your car and how you drive it. For anyone who dosent have a 2.4 mainfold, the EDS map is a good option, and I'd wager the overall performance for £295 is more than comparable to £200 worth of manifold and £600 worth of TMS remap to get it working right.

Hopefully there are a few of you who wish to remain on the 2.4 mainfold route, if so please PM me as I have one for sale with everything needed to fit it. Including a 2.4l TB that is completely frickin usless! lol.

I am glad you are happy with your remap it would be good to see what the figures are like now. Hopefully we will meet again and i can have another spin in your car.

Interesting news indeed

I spoke to MPG a few week ago regarding remapping with the 2.4 mani fitted, and TBH I'm now loathe to fit it

Almost been a week now since the remap, and I think its settling in nicely, It feels even better now ive done a few hundred miles and still brings a big cheesy grin when I put my foot down. I'm guessing all the hardware ive had fitted for the last 12 month or more has been screaming out for a good map to pull it all together, and I just regret not getting it done sooner.

It would be nice if EDS developed a solution for the 2.4, because I honestly belive it could yeild good results, but I cant see them having the motivation to develop something when their buisness partners already offer a different product. Dosent really make buisness sense? plus youve got to consider that for similar money to a manifold that happens to fit and maybe offer a little more peak power, plus the cost of a £600 remap to suit, you could have a purpose designed and manufatured dbilas manifold with software. I know it still slightly more expensive, and the gains have been disputed a lot, but I've seen the graph for a very highly spec'd 2.2 with dbilas manifolds, dbilas cams and a dbilas head, and I just cant post them on here because you'd just never belive me. You'd dispute the RR and we'd end up arguing, hell I didnt belive it myself until I went out in it, but I have been out in it, and its just phenominal for a 2.2. I'd be tempted to get one myself, but when you way it up, its still a lot of money, and these days you could drop yourself a zlet in for the same money if your good with a spanner, and then youve got far more potential.

Si, I cant wait to get some power figures too, but unless It goes against some other 2.2's on the same rollers on the same day, I't would be hard to try and quantify the acuracy of the figures and have benchmarks to compare against. Idealy I should travel down to the courtenay RR day / xmas party do, but Im still reluctant to do that distance again. If your ever over this side of the snake pass, give me a bell because it would be great to meet up again and your always more than welcome to give her a good spanking......my car that is! lol. In fact, youve got the dbilas exhaust manifold havnt you? Get yourself a sports cat too and the phase 2 remap, I recon you'd be pretty happy with the results, and its not all that far for you to travel. You could even stop in the travel lodge next to MPG and Sarah and I will take you and the missus out for the night.

Ffoeg, keep us up to date buddy, let us know which way you decide to go.
