am i right in thinking these need to attach to the red and yellow wires on the back of the head unit ?

I assume these connect to the back of the head unit. One wire will be permanent live (Battery) and the other is switchable live (Ingition Switch)

Have you not got the adaptor still on the back on the wiring loom for the stereo? It should notmally just be a case of plug and play if you have. If not, normally, the red one if the permenant live, and the yellow is the ignition live.

Looking good gaz.... Noticed that your temp display is still working with a diff stereo. Did you buy a little box to do that?

The temperature and clock display will still work with any stereo. It's the radio information display which you will need to buy an adapter for. My parents had one in their old Vectra for a Kenwood head unit. The adapter cost ~£90 though, which is a bit much just to get the station name on the display
