I know I know, can you tell I dont want to do it?

I should be able to get it off tomorow after work if the weather lets me.

ah so the oil pump runs off the crank but not off the chains, thats good.

i see the special crank pulley removal tool there aswell.

shouldnt take long to do, its just what i find behind there, i will be at the point of no return.

i need to crack on with it, it cant just sit there. i will let you know what happens tomorow evening.

only one thing i spotted from your pics
the stud at the chain end of the manifold is new its shiny the rest are rusty

i think you need to remove the cover and see whats going on

@evocarlos the studs the other end are clean(er) as well.

The ticking when cold, going away when warmed up reminds me of my old VW Transporter T5 5 cyl, that had a cracked manifold - got a fumey smell in the cab through the air vents with that.

Agree with looking inside. C'mon, Dave, it's not that difficult.

I know its not hard to get inside. Its the right now you have come this far, you mares well go abit further(chains) I just dont want owt to do with them. I will get the cover off n pray I dont have to touch the chains. If I do have to touch the chains I mite have to pay for expertise. ;) you busy carl?

ive not seen a broken balancer tensioner guide to date but i guess with 10 year old plastic parts they do go brittle and the fact it has coyles stamped on it means its the original

the balancer chain is not critical to engine timing so not to much of an issue as long as it still turns the pump and dont come off the sprokets have seen them that long they dont even touch the lower guide :)

I supose when they get that bad the timing chain is just as bad so that lets go first.
all i hear on the interwebings is ""the 2.2 is s**t the chains snap"" well in all the guys and girls from here i have done work on there cars there was only one case where the chain had snapped 40:1 not to bad odds

I'm back from the garage, said they weren't prepared to look at it as it could turn out to be massive job! and my car is a tad obscure for them.

One thing I've noticed is I am getting more engine vibration through the car than normal especially on idle. This would be more noticable on my car with it being so light/ made of plastic.

Will video mine in the morning.

I noticed extra vibration on tick over aswell. I thought it was my exhaust heat shield(hanging off the car alittle at the back).

Defo sounds like we have the same problem.

Where abouts are you? We could fault find together hahaha
