'Change Petrol, Get Advice'

Motorists are being urged to replace petrol in their cars even if they have not been affected by the rogue fuel mystery.

Experts say they should also keep their receipts and seek legal advice over compensation.

Furious drivers say they have been forced to spend hundreds of pounds fixing their cars after buying "contaminated" petrol.

Ray Holloway, director of the Petrol Retailers' Association, said: "Motorists who have not been affected could save themselves a bill by changing the petrol in their tanks. That would be my recommendation."

However, the RAC says they should not attempt to siphon fuel themselves and take their car to a garage.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said affected drivers should contact their car dealer or manufacturer for advice.

If faulty fuel was proved to be the source of the problem, suppliers may be responsible for repair costs.

And lawyer Joanne Barker, of Which? legal service, said drivers should also double-check the details of their car insurance and warranty.

She said they may find they are covered for any work that needs to be carried out and replacement parts.

"If it can be shown that the petrol was contaminated then the costs of repair can be reclaimed from the retailing garage," she said.

Thousands of vehicles are thought to have been affected by "contaminated" fuel sold on supermarket forecourts.

The suspect petrol - which affects the car's oxygen sensors - is being investigated by trading standards.

Drivers have experienced problems after buying petrol from, in particular, Tesco and Morrisons in the south east of England, although there are reports of problems elsewhere.

Both the RAC and AA have reported a marked increase in breakdowns.

Independent oil company Greenergy says it is testing fuel supplied to the supermarkets, who both say their own checks show none of their fuel was contaminated.
