Planning DIY Chain

Im only new on here so go easy,, Hello to every1 its a great site.

I am planning on doing my timming chain in the next week or so.

I`v looked for a howto but dont think there is one 🙁
Would be greatfull if any one could even type up a rough one.

Need any info / pics any one can offer, im not really looking forward to this job, but i simply cant afford to get it done.
And yes i could have got benny`s fee but he livves too far away, pitty.

Just one last thing, been looking all over for a list of parts i need but any i seem to find dont really effect the top chain ?? maybe not needed ??

you only need replace the cam chain, there are a few pic's on the site, some more info in the tuning section - bottom end rebuild + timing marks

it's not too difficult, just time consuming

is it easy to do as a diy job? i would also like to do mine but not too sure if i would be able to. what sort of tools are required?

Im colecting all the info & pics i can from the site,,

One thing i`v noticed in the pics,, i take it the strut has been removed to gain better access ?

Here is a list of parts you'll need. I've added the balance shaft chain kit but its optional as they very rarely snap.

Timing chain Kit
Cam cover Gasket
Timing cover gasket
Crank Shaft oil Seal (optional but only a couple of quid)
Crank Bolt
Oil + Filter
Balance shaft chain kit (optional)

Also no need to remove the strut to change te chain.

Just thought every1 was removing the strut for better access, all the pics look like they have plenty of room.

Sorry im still trying to get to grips with this whole job, starting to get confused now ????
Timing chain kit is the bottom chain ? (this bottom one is the one i understand to be the problem chain ?
balance shaft chain kit, is the one that runs over the top two cams ?

I hear of ppl taking the sump off & oil pump, but i take it thats only if it has snapped, (mines not yet)

no the timing chain is the one that goes around the cams and this is the problem one, the bottom one is the balance shaft chain and isn't a must do job although i changed mine for the sake of it.

mine hadn't snapped and it was done without removing the sump. the oil pump is built into the timing chain cover.

i think all the bits you see in the diagram you get in the timing chain kit.

yes, that's the whole kit 🙂

no need to touch suspension, but might be easier to remove the osf wheel for better access

will learn the hard way i suspect, at first i thought the strut would need taken off to allow access,
So could anyone give a breif run down on the parts that need taken off to get at it ??

dont want to waste time taking things off i dont need to.

Have the parts on order today, they say a few days..

air filter box has to come off first - sod of a job to get the rear bolt off :lol:

then;
cam cover, auxillary drive belt + tensioner, engine mount, timing chain cover

might of missed a few bits notsure.gif

I'm sure they must put the airbox in 1st then add the engine l8r...as u need hands like a 2 yr old to get them nuts off the rubbers...hence y mine dint go bk on...

I found the best way is to use a very long spanner and put some grease on the threads before you refit the airbox - makes it easier next time :lol:

Well have all my parts now, BUT i was amazed to find the revised/reworked oil feed jet has indeed a far bigger opening but the bugger still has two tiny wee holes in the other end!! whats the point of only fixing one end ?

Feel like drilling mine just a little bit bigger.

But anyway hope to start in the next day or two, it will take a few days as i plan on doing a few other things.

the new oil jet is fine, the blockage was caused by a spring inside the infeed

well started to take things apart today, but got side tracked by removing the pre cat.

Had to fight with the blady cat to get it off, im pooped now.

Have some pics but not sure if im allowed to post them here ??
