The wife went to drive off in her Zafira this moring but the N/S rear brake has seized on. Its a rear disc brake setup. Is there a quick fix to releasing it, like taking the wheel off and giving the hub a quick whack???

Thanks for that mate. I was hoping a thump would work. Its -2`C outside at the moment and I wasn't looking forward to a strip down this morning!

Thanks for your quick response, i'll let you know how I get on.

Well, what a b*****d!!

Job done now. It would appear that the handbrake cable had frozen. Anyway, it took me 40 minutes just to remove the wheel. The wheel was seized to the hub for starters. It was -2`C and I was on the floor under the car with a lump hammer and a block of wood bashing 10 bells of s**t out of the wheel. I then tried letting the car down off the jack without the bolts in and rocking the car side to side. That didn't work, so I went back to bashing the wheel from the underside again. Eventually the wheel started to move off the hub and away it came. I gave the hub and the inside of the wheel a quick blast with some wet & dry. Then I set about the hub and callpier with a mallet. Nothing! So as I was starting to freesze my bollocks off, I got the fan heater out the garage and sat it next to me and the hub. Within about 5 minutes the disc spun free on its own. I noticed a lot of wet around the rear of the disc guard. This is probably down to me washing the car a few days ago and it hasn't had chance to dry out since. So, all done now.

Thing is now, Chris had to borrow MY CAR to take Lauren to the doctors this morning. This is the first time that she's driven the car since the SC. She came home later with that stupid grin and wants to go out in it again now!! Marvellous!! pmsl..

Don't start!!

I've got enough voices in my head that i'm fighting with let alone thinking about fitting a turbo on her car. pmsl..

I'm struggling not to put a rear window/roof spoiler on it at the moment and i've noticed this morning whilst under it that it could do with a new backbox shortly. I feel a nice little shiney stainless number going on soon!!

Had the same problem with my Astra the rubber sleeve on the cable ends let water in.. frozen cables. I drained it of and squirted some silicone grease in there, then put some thicker grease around the end of the cable to stop this from happening again. :)

Well it happened to the Astra today, -6.5 c this morning i could not get the car to shift, a few thousand RPM it moved and then i dragged it up the road andonto the Dual carriage way where it eased off, it never got above -3C at work and it was the same. After the 36miles on the motorway it eased off but it is stil not 100% free.

Will it improve after the temp rises or does it need stripping down?

I released the handbrake cables from both sides on Sunday morning. The rubber sleeves on the ends of the cable where it joins the back of the hub are split and letting in water. I squirted WD40 up the cables and then coated everything in grease. Put it all back together and it froze up again today. I think it needs Daz TLC to sort it out shortly!!

pmsl..

Whenever i know its going to be very cold overnight i've got to leave my handbrake off otherwise its frozen on the next day! Got some Lucas calipers which i still need to fit so hopefully that should solve it!

I have got the lucas ones as well and they still froze up.

Just had it serviced and everything was reported to be fine, must have been the extreme temps.
