Gearbox oil level

I'm the first to admit i dont fully know how the magic inside a gearbox works :D

When the engines were swapped round on my vectra, the oil was just released from the box when the driveshafts were removed and there was no way to measure it because the drain pan was already full of other stuff.

Ive never known how much to put back in since, and ive had semi synthetic in, the best i could get at the time.

Ive got two 1 litre bottles of synthetic vauxhall oil waiting to go in. but..

...overfill
Is there a definitive way of knowing if this has to be done, ive done some searches on here and people have drained 2 litres + from boxes without the yellow mark on the level plug. Like mine, no markings. is there anything else i can look for? whats different about the boxes to need the extra .5 litres?
Do i put 1.5 litres in and wonder, 2 litres and pray

The engine came from my old 2001 (Y) vectra.

Thankyou cheers..

I think they take 2 litres from empty or 1.5 litres when the oil is drained

the best way is to use the oil level plug on the side of the gearbox, once oil starts to come out of that then refit the plug and add a little more

Thanks, sounds like the sensible thing to do :)

Looks like i'll have to make do with a slight mix of synthetic and semi synth if its not possible to get it all out, hopefully they wont mix badly and gel up.
I'll give the box a good shake and another fresh batch of oil when its clutch time lol

Its not too bad at all to change on the ground, you'll have to cut an allen key down a bit to get the drain plug out though, theres a guide on here somewhere. Getting the drain plug back in is a bit fiddly. The level and filler plugs are quite accessable.
I just jacked the front of the car up to remove the drain plug, then dropped it back to the ground to let it drain. I may have been using my mirror on a stick to watch for oil when it got to the level hole.

I've yet to put the new stuff in yet, its still in my boot
i'm just recalling what i did after the engine swap, I hope it improves it though. I have a sneaky suspicion its my cheapo quickshifter attached to the gearbox thats my main problem, all gears are fine apart from 3rd is a bit stubborn to get into.

Im sure my gearbox is voodoo powered lol

I drained 1.5l out of it this afternoon, i remember thats what it took to get to the level hole last time.
Then it took my two 1 litre bottles of vauxhall synthetic and never reached the level hole, magic!

Not quite sure what to do now, leave it alone or try to get some more.
