6 speed conversion

finally finished the gear lever today, added some black heatshrink sleeving to the lever, finishes off the black look 8)

[the gearknob is from a bmw, so is the handbrake lever handle]

after flogging the original gearbox/shafts/etc the conversion worked out at about £1400 🙂

My BMW Coupe gearknob was illuminated, PITA cos it was allways in the lower corner of my eyes when driving at night.

update;

I wasn't happy with the lever 'throw' so moved the gear lever ball joint for the cable end to create a 'short shift', much happier with it now 🙂

the downside was the gaiter had to be replaced, so bought a nice leather one from ebay, a little modification later and I'm reasonably happy with it, it compliments the bmw gearknob 8)

as usual I got bored...

a Helix 'hybrid' clutch plate (228mm sprung M32 centre), my spare uprated cover plate, a new 17mm slave cylinder spacer and back together..

so hopefully a better clutch to allow for some mods......

You're one crazy dude!! I thought that you were still 'bedding' in the previous clutch?? One thing is for certain, if you ever get let down in your job, you'll never be stuck with your knowledge.

I got fed up with the kevlar clutch, it would of taken all year to bed it in, this Helix clutch doesn't need bedding in at all 20.gif

yet another update :shock:

I officially hate the uprated clutch cover I bought, it's caused me so much work noth.

to cut a long story short it made the clutch bind when the engine was hot cry..

so off with the clam / suspension / exhaust / driveshafts / gearbox 🙁

I have refitted the standard cover plate (again) with the Helix hybrid plate and a 14.5mm spacer behind a brand new M32 slave cylinder, I noticed the hybrid slave cylinder was very slightly noisy when the car was in neutral :roll:

so I hope thats it as I'm fed up playing with clutches :lol:

Why the different thickness in slave silinder spacers? 17 vs now 14.5mm??

the 'useless' uprated clutch cover sits closer to the block (cos it's shite) so that required the 17mm spacer

originally I had a 13mm spacer, but thats the minimum size you can safely use and means the slave cylinder works near the end of it's travel

I decided to fit a 14.5mm spacer for the current set up, to allow a bit of a margin so the slave cylinder works within it's maximum travel distance

You're right, we killed our slave cylinder working too close from the max travel distance 🙁

230€ for that stupid mistake

Cheers Neil cheers.. , my clutch disc is still in the box with the flywheel next to the M32 .... no time :cry: However I do have the front clam off to fit the charge cooler etc and the plan is next week working holiday to fit the charger to the 2-2 engine so I have some use this summer then re aasemble the 2.0 LSJ for instalation over the winter with the M32. How's the t/body going ??

a good idea Jon, a winter project is more fun too 😃

I have taken a few more pics to help you with the m32 conversion, especially the route of the clutch pipework, which looks neat and works well.

the Helix clutch certainly doesn't need bedding in, I actually span the rear wheels once :shock: I know my poor tyres, it won't happen again I promise :lol:
