it's not difficult, if you can remove and refit the cams then the timing is easy 🙂

also you can check your oil jet at the same time, if it's the older small version simply pull the brass insert out of the oil jet to create the later version 🙂

Dont you need to drop the engine a few inches to remove one of the lower timing case bolts? Mechanics have said this all 3 times my timing cover has been off (to double and triple check!!) :roll:

What actually happended - did the chain fall off the sprocket? You will only loose the timing on the bottom half of the engine if there is enough slack in the chain for it to come off the crank sprocket.

My advice would be to when tightening the camshaft bolts is to fit the bolts just tight enough to hold the cam sprockets on, make sure sure the chain is correctly on then release the chain tensioner. You can then go back and tighten up the camshaft bolts - if you slip again, all you will be doing is turning the engine over by hand. I always turn the engine over by hand a few revolutions after a rebuild - one reason being its a good way to make sure you're not going to bend a valve with incorrect timing.

you can leave the water pump bolt in the lower casing, just remember to refit the bolt before refitting the lower casing or you will have to take it off again :roll:

I beleive it only came off the top sprockets but i didnt think i have anyway of knowing if the bottom one is ok and hasnt slipped? If I take the cams back out and rotate the engine until the timing chain marks for the cam cranks show, could i line it up that way? I guess it would be obvious at that point if the bottom crank had slipped as well?I.e if it is still in place TDC should give me 10 to 2 on cyclinder 4?

Having read the TIS Guidance it does seem to involve lifting the engine to get some of the timing chain case bolts, I dont want tobut im erring towards getting a mechanic to do it, I hate giving up on things like this but i need the car and i'm beginning tot think this could take me a while 🙁 .

Anyone know of someone in the woking area who might could do this for a reasonable price or am i going to have to get it towed to Now Vauxhall in Byfleet ?

you should have a go yourself first, the hardest part is removing the crank bolt otherwise it's almost as easy as removing the cam cover 🙂

You only need a bit of slack in the chain for it to fall of the bottom sprocket. There is no way of know if it line up properly then, as it could easily just be one link out. I would do it yourself - its easy taking the cover off (just a bit fiddly due to location of bolts), its then just a case of makesure the marker on the bottom sprocket is line up with the coloured chain link. Then just line the cams as you were. The hardest bit will be to undo the crank bolt. Just make sure you leave the car in gear with the hand brake on and find the biggest bar for your socket you can find.

Make sure you get all the cams timed and the tensioner on before you put the cover back on - you don't want to have to take the cover off again. :oops:

So to confirm a couple of things:

you are probably best to replace the gasket 'B' and crank pulley oil seal, they do advise to replace the crank bolt too, should be about £20 ish for that lot.

bolt 'A' is the long water pump bolt, leave this loose in the casing, makes life a little easier

Ok..........the crank pulley bult is out and the tensioner is removed but the crank pulley itself seems quite firmly on. Im nervous of forcing anything at the moment so wondered if i have missed anything or do I just need work it off with a screwdriver or something?

Its located on a woodruff key so just give it a bit of leverage on both sides and it shud come off..

trouble is with clam on i can only get at it from underneath so i cant apply equal pressure 🙁

so cam timing cover is off......sort of i cant see how i would get the long water pump bolt out completely but i have enough space to move the timing chainand line it up on the bottom sprocket:

what colour goes where, there are two pinks and one blue?
if i cant get the last bolt out do i just have to keep the old gasket in place?

1) Blue right hand cam sprocket, pink/purple left cam sprocket and bottom sprocket - These 2 threads are useful and have pics

2) Give it a go with the old gasket. Worse that can happen is you have to take the cover off again if it leaks.
