How To "Fitting Cams"

I've now got poormansporche's cams. He couldn't remember what spec they are..
They are marked with "db 61G"
anyone know how I can get the spec of them from that code? Tried their website, but can't find any mention of 61G

I think they are 256 degree cams with a 11mm lift, but might be completely wrong

You should have let me bring them down for Slindborg to measure at the same time! 🙂

Just measure the lobes "top-to-bottom" and " side-to-side", substract and you know at least the cam lift.
(But on a Z22SE this is not valve lift, as these have small lifters with a ..... ratio.)

reading this do you have to take the chain off then and remove the sprocket or with the tool do you lock the sprockets and undo the blots holdint the cams to the sprocks and they come out? mite sound like a rli stupid question but i dont have much to do with chains

if you have the locking tool you simply unbolt the camshaft from the sprocket leaving the chain tensioned and timed correctly.

the cams then slide out towards the gearbox

Hi all - thanks for all the assistance so far 🙂

The Car is all back together now and i have done about 40 miles in it. Couple of things i have noticed:

lumpy tickover ( i was expecting this)
Car has bogged down a couple of times when i have put my foot down from low in the rev range (2500+)
Possible rattle at tickover that wasnt there before ( this is the one that worries me a bit) vague I know but it's difficult to describe a noise 🙂

Nunmber 3 maybe nothing more than something rattleing against the engine rather than in it but as this was my first real attempt at some engine work I am a little paranoid.

I am also hoping 2 is the fuel trim adjusting as i had something similiar when i fitted the 2.4 mani

Any opinions welcome

duration: 256°
peak timing: 116°/104°
valve lift: 10,8
lift at TDC: 0,2/1,2
valve timing IO/IC - EO/EC: 12/64 - 52/24
valve clearence: hydro

should be similar to piper and schrick, they all seem to add around 10 bhp dunno..

Hi Gents,

Of the three points i raised earlier 2 has settled down nicely and the fuelling just seems to keep improving. they are still lumpy at tickove and thats fine, but ....

I still have the ticking noise and it's got to the point where i m going to take the cam cover off to see if there is anything obvious. My question is can I leave the battery connected, i dont want to lose what the ECU has learned as it took a couple of weeks to settle down?

As a backstop i have booked it into courtenays for a remap and they will have look then if i cant find out what the problem is.

you don't need to disconnect the battery to remove the cam cover, BUT it sounds like you have noisy lifters

Thanks- is this something i will be able to detect by inspection? and if it is the case does this just mean ordering new ones, forgive my lack of knowledge but by lifters do you mean the cam followers?

the z22se has a roller 'rocker' and a hydraulic lifter, sometimes when fitting performance cams the lifters become noisy, this is due to them being used to working with the old cams and sticking, thus not adjusting to the new cams.

I had to replace mine, £10 each from autovaux :roll:

My lifters were quite noisy after the Cam change and they do still make a little clatter upon startup (for 1-2secs untill oil pressure is up)... I thought i was gonna have to live with it the whole time, however after one Very enthusisatic B-Road blast its now as quiet as it was prior. Maybe it just needs a good old italian tune-up 🙂
