the car will function without the 2nd sensor even plugged in as its only for monitoring

I'll give it a go tomoz. Seems to get worse as it gets hotter. Most annoying thing is the throttle response goes to pot.

I've welded 100's of cars without disconnecting battery etc and never had a problem. Welded a complete exhaust on Astra and no problems. It's more than likely a lambda has broke or they have damaged a wire

Well the wiring looks ok and I've changed all sensors except crank sensor. Spare ECU will be here this week, so I'll give it a go and see what happens. With hindsight I should have driven straight back and let them sort this out. Seem to be a bit temp related too as the problem gets worse as it gets hotter although the tickover is pants whatever.

Disconnected the front O2 sensor and it made no difference to the running :-(

then theres somthing wrong with the front 02 but i had that and the map sensor was also faulty see what readings your getting on the map sensor

I have another front sensor somewhere so I'll dig it out. Is there somewhere that gives the ' normal ' OPCOM setting to compare against mine?
Something it has picked up is the clutch switch is active when not depressed and inactive when depressed......bit weird.

As above when I had a cat fitted some years ago the 2nd sensor got damaged, didn't cause any issue bar EML but had to be replaced.

ECU arrived today....so am gonna go play.

Righty. Bunged the ECU in and went for a spin. Tickover is still pants ( but this is an un-mapped ECU on a much modded engine ) but the revs are now normal. If I take my foot off the throttle the revs drop and don't increase. Have spoken to Courtenay's and the spare ECU is going to be posted off to them tomoz for flashing.

Well I'm sure it could be a coincidence but 50yds down the road after the welding the engine light came on and things went down hill from there on in. A standard ecu has ironed out the over revving problem, and I'll try and get it back on OPCOM later.

I've been reading up that a poor earth When welding can fry ecu's.

Generally the welder will put his earth clamp local to the area he is welding i.e if exhaust on exhaust not on rear chassis leg if welding front wing as to minimise the whole car acting as a earth. I'd be surprised if it was the welding as done my own Astra with battery still connected and zero problems and I've made two exhausts on that now and even temp repaired a cast manifold in situ and had no problems. Have you checked all wiring to lambdas? As often they don't back wind the wiring so when you tighten it it's not tightly twisted.
