I am 99.99% certain that the crank is in it's proper position now what do the people say

Redone the balance chain timing as well i think it helps make it easier for doing the main chain

My f##cking tensioner went soft on me chain was dipping when rotating crank then i realised tensioner aint working right this is turning into a nightmare think i need to open up tensioner or do i fill it with oil it seems ok for a couple of presses then goes soft again

did u engage the tensioner?

im not 100% sure but im sure u have to push it agains a hard surface like a wall or the floor etc n then it clicks @[deleted] will confirm or put.me right im sure, but with all the cranking over it should engage its self i think. bad shit mate(but atleast you know now what is at fault) kepp goin your nearly there.

Cheers Dave it all makes sense now why it would not start before.The tensioner had been activated before from brand new so i assumed it would be okay but because there is very little oil in the tensioner which gives it the pressure this is why it was not working and no oil was coming up to keep the pressure because engine would not kick in. at first i thought the chain was done when i saw it dipping during rotation , but now i know

At least the worst of the work is over and done with , all that is needed now is engine mount off cover off and re-set timing again
I am itching to get it up and running

I was starting to think the smoke dog had lost his touch, yesterday i opened up tensioner and poured oil in and put back together and it seemed to be working properly again#

It has been a mega adventure with all the dramas

What tensioner did you use? I thought the newer z20net didn't rely on oil pressure

non of them do at start up 🙂 but they all rely on oil pressure when the engine is running

they all have springs to take the slack up during startup while the oil pressure builds up
is if its fitted unactivated then you get no spring tension on the guide causing chain flap until the oil pressure is there "quite dangerous"

i would of stripped it cleaned all the old gunk out then blew the oil feed hole with air then reset the tension put it back together and then reactivated it making sure it was free moving before activation and then sprung loaded after activation

i think we all want to see it running now after the drama 🙂

Yes i'ts the z20 net tensioner i have but for some reason it went floppy on me

I did not know what else to do that was the first thing i thought of , i know they rely on oil , so it was either that or viagra to keep it hard
The gods are testing me on this one for sure, tonight went to see what i could get done got mounts off, chain cover off then put crank and bolt on again to turn to tdc then the pulley would not come off stuck :mad: was not for shifting need to stop off at the garage tomorrow to pick up my sliding hammer , it will not shift without it only got a few hours after work during the week before darkness starts to set in but defo by the weekend should be up and running , been saying that to myself for about 3 weeks now though 😃

Maybe tomorrow built up and ready to fire it up the day after

This bit on the slide hammer does the trick nicely, has worked before just haven't needed it for a while , gently does it all around pulley works a treat
Too dark to do anymore tonight, a buzz gun would've been handy also for the pulley bolt would save a little time farting around

I was trying a claw hammer last night and pulling hard but it was not for shifting

So i have realised why the crank pulley was jammed

When i got the pulley off i thought it was a little piece of the woodruff key which had broken. more drama
Another detour on the way home tomorrow to get another pulley

Something else i need to ask does the main chain sprocket sit flush against the balance chain sprocket i think it does but can't remember, there is a little space between the 2

Would probably be best to get it off i have a spare woodruff key that i got way at the beginning when getting the parts in.
My plan tonight was just remove cam sprockets and line up links with marks on sprockets without removing guide rails then i discovered this

One more question i would like to ask

ahh you aligned the oil pump but not the key before tightening
ive seen worse and worked on it lol

It looks pretty grimey inside there whoevers engine that is

I usually twist the pulley side to side while pressing slightly until the notch on pulley meets key it usually works okay will need to invest in one of those pullers for future use but just trying to get by with what i have right now

I'm sure this is your tool looks good
would like to get one of these made at my work ( some good heavy duty welders where i am just now) it would have been ideal instead of on off all the time the way i have been doing the work ,tightening bolt to turn crank clockwise only . with this type of tool crank set at tdc held in position with a good pulley holder then removed and that's it.

Need to remove all chains AGAIN and get new key in and start all over hopefully for the last time
Would you not recommend using crank pulley again . I think it would only be inviting trouble .

@[deleted] would you happen to have a spare crankshaft pulley for sale by chance or do you think i could re- use the damaged one i have, there is only a little nick from the corner so am thinking of taking a gamble, the one at my uncle's garage has gone walkabout. it is a couple of years since i got the other engine but i would still expect it to be around
Or if anyone has a pulley for sale let me know please would like to get it by saturday if possible

you will be fine to use that one just file the burr from the edge 🙂

Thanks Mr C i was going to gamble on it, but as you have so much experience with these parts and engines your opinion is highly valued
@[deleted] has offered one to me(y) so i will get that as well to have a spare handy . Will save some headaches of hunting around scrapyards using up valuable time

Have put in an order for crank holding tool also, 70mm diameter for centre of wheel the guy says, so he will weld a bit of pipe to a handle just the basic and i can use a burr myself to make the notches to catch on the 3 spokes similar to the one you have
Will also stop at my local machine mart after work and pick up one of those gear puller tools probably better to have that which is controlled extraction rather than a sliding hammer which could damage the little crank sprocket , play it safe and sensible

Still getting bother with the chain dipping i have opened the tensioner again but can't seem to re-set it properly i twist the internal part but when it is back in body it sits too far down when it is up there is still a little movement in the plunger part which i think is causing the chain to dip either that or the chain needs changing due to too much messing around

Need a how to for dummies @[deleted]

Nightmare stuff it seem i get it right where it locks in proper position there is a little movement on the plunger then after several presses it travels too far down again is there something i am doing wrong
