I'm now up and running on Windows 8 on the desktop.

The only thing left to try on my laptop is the op-com software 🙂

It's holding out better on the desktop than it did on the laptop. I think one of the issues may have been there are a lot of intel drivers needed for the Ultrabook, and one of them may not have been working correctly on Windows 8

I've even got my old USB Sound Blaster working in Windows 8, which is nice, as I don't have to have it installed on the laptop any more.

another nice new feature in Windows 8, is that I can now view thumbnails on NEF files (the RAW image format from a Nikon DSLR).

I'm a little miffed reading this about the DVD playback. When I was buying 2 new laptops for the kids Christmas presents 2 weeks ago, the salesman asked if the kids watch DVD's and I told him yes. He pointed me in the direction of the HP laptops which have Windows 8 and never mentioned a thing about not being able to view DVD's?

I have a HP pavilion G6-2279sa notebook. I bought it last week & none of the shop assistance mentioned this issue to me either!

I'll try playing a DVD tonight and see what happens.

I think it might be slightly different for people who have upgraded to windows 8 from windows 7. So you might be lucky that it'll play DVDs from the drive.
I think the problem is for new pc/ laptops loaded with windows 8 from new.

Forgot to try this 🙁 Will give it a go tomorrow.

So far, I'm getting on OK with Windows 8. I'm really not a fan of the UI / splash screen. I can see this working really well on a tablet PC, but I find it a real annoyance on a PC. All my applications have worked, and so has the hardware.

Yeah, windows 8 was designed for tablets & the windows touch screen computers. I like the idea of touch screens but I still prefer the old fashioned keyboard & mouse!

Oh really I'm surprised as some of the DVD codecs are meant to remain when you upgrade from windows 7 or that's what I read when I was searching for answers.
Shame really as it would be a fantastic setup to be able to have the DVD play back with the windows 8.

Yep, I stuck the DVD in, the menu came up asking what I wanted to do with the disc. I could either import pictures or explore the disc. I tried to load the DVD through the movies app, but that only gave me the option to view movies from their online database.

You can download a third party software to run dvd's. I am tempted to try windows 8 pro as I got my free product code from Microsoft for windows media centre but don't want to pay £50 only to find it still won't have DVD play back.
Unfortunately the anydvd software my mate put on my laptop is only a trial & is now telling me its nearly expired 🙁

I'm not really fussed about not being able to play DVD's on the PC, as it's only going to be used for music stuff. My Ultrabook doesn't even have a DVD drive fitted to it

Seems a real pain in the arse though that Win 8 is being do difficult for DVD playback. Suppose it's one more way to get people to buy into their "cloud" set up and stream movies online.
