Fitting a Standalone ECU

you can buy a cam sensor from the usa for the LSJ, pretty cheap too dunno..

the problem I get is the alpha ecu measures the time it takes for the trigger wheel to go around, as I have a very light flywheel, a lightened crank pulley, no balancer shafts, no mechanical water pump or chain and very strong valve springs.

so it gets easily confused where number one is, thus it's a git to start :thumbdown:

a cam sensor would eliminate the problem as it would know exactly where each cylinder was dunno..

i looked into it a while ago..
It needs a wheel "pressed" onto the exh cam somehow, and I couldn't find a good description of how or of the details of the trigger pattern. If we could work out a way to use it would be nice 🙂

zafiraz22se has bought one, I had a look at it the other week, just a disc really dunno..

my plan was to fit a 10mm alloy plate to the inlet cam auxillary housing (to replace the thin blanking plate), then fit a bolt to the top of the inlet cam auxillary drive extension, then fit a sensor which reads the signal only at TDC/firing of number 1

use the trigger wheel and a sensor mounted the same as above dunno..

the trigger wheel has an approx 90 degree gap in the disc [I assume at number 1 firing / tdc]

got to look at what kind of signal is acceptable to alpha/dta ecu before doing anything... since they can be quite fussy about what pattern is needed as we know

Yep, OE cam triggers are generally a weird pattern, don't know if the DTA would support any "generic" regular pattern for this or only OE patterns that you would have to replicate.

In any case, does not sound that difficult

plenty of room for the coilpack there, even the leads will have loads of clearance :thumbup:

did a few more things while I'm waiting for parts..

bracket for coil pack

leads - I chopped the rubber end bit off a set of generic leads and pushed the z22se rubber ends on.. i am a little worried about water ingress as the top of the rubber isn't pushed down onto the cover like it is with standard coil pack, although it is held in place with some force by the actual lead being a very tight fit inside. I can always make a set of brackets that push it down if it becomes a problem..

I'll need to modify it to fit where I want it though 🙁 it's too deep.. but the stuff inside the case only goes half way so easily done with the hacksaw (why make it so long in the first place? notsure.gif )

got everything I need now..

I finally took the old head off, signs of HGF at cylinder #4 which is a relief (found the cause of the problem 🙂)
And also, as I had kind've suspected, my pistons are damaged! on the exhaust side the valves have hit the pistons.. as we've seen before when the chain jumps. This isn't because of the HGF but because of when I fitted cams in 2008 and didn't align properly 🙁 so I've been running like this since before I fitted the SC, well over a year! Therefore I'm just going to leave them it like this until my new block is ready. Explains also my ~ 20bhp down on other sc cars since no doubt the valves aren't closing properly 🙂

no I have a fully refurbished saab head I'm putting on 🙂
I mean't I'm leaving the pistons like that

could someone tell me which z20net camshaft is the exhaust and which is the intake :o
I didnt realise they weren't labelled like the z22se ones! I have L-12 and L-13

L12 and L13 sound like 150 bhp turbo cams dunno..

I think L12 will be the inlet, but I will go and have a look at the 175 bhp saab ones I have in the garage

Wish I had of known I have some old valves laying around I could have sent them when I sent the 2278

dont need any valves 😛 only my z22se ones are bent, saabs are brand new 😛
