Insurance Query

As most of you guys know I wrote my Astra Coupe SE1 off a few months ago now!
I got the usual book price for the car from the Insurance Company which I was fine with,as it was I was happy with the offer I got I got the payment which has now been cashed and went to the new car.
My query anyway is I recieved a letter this morning from the Insurance Company telling me that I owed them X amount for the rest of the years policy!!! :wtf: :? notsure.gif
So I called them to get a "RELLY" arrogent guy on the other end of the phone telling me "that I took a years insurance out so I had to pay for the whole year!" I told him "the car is wrote off and it was your companies choice to write the car off I no longer have the car so what are you talking about how can you expect me to pay for insurance on a car that I don't own" to be told the exact same thing word for word that I took a years policy out with them so I HAVE to pay a year or they are going to sue me for the money!!!
Does anyone know where I stand on this or has anyone had the same issue? As far as I'm concerbed they can whistle I'm not giving them a penny!!! I am going to let the Ombismun deal with it as I think they are just chancing their arm.
All comments welcome...
cheers.. Alan

look at it this way

u get a policy for the usual 12 months and pay by direct debit monthly

the first month u write the car off and it books at 5k, the insurance company gives u 5k

u have only paid a small portion of the policy

a lot of insurance companies have stopped temporary cover now due to scams

what i am saying is if you were to write your car off and claim then be allowed cancel the policy the following month then i think everyone would be at it

i think robbosri had to pay his policy off for the year after he wrote his 2.2 off

i havent yet had the pleasure of totalling a car under my own insurance, not saying i want 2 if i am tempting fate :p

Thanks Mike yea I see what you're saying and had never really looked at it from that point of veiw but I had owned the car for about 4 years and have been with that company for 3 of those 4 years so have payed more than what I got from them for the car!
They also took £450 for excess as I said I will contact the Insurance Ombismun and see what they say but I think if that is the case then it is really unfair you take a Insurance Policy out in case you do have the misfortunt of what happened to me happening!
I'll also have a look at my policy in detail and read all the small writing again but why wait two months after paying me the money to inform me of this?
Thanks for your information and outlook on it Mike (fingers crossed)I don't have to pay the rest of the policy off but from what you are saying I am unsure now where i stand,as you things have changed now as my younger brother wrote his Megane Coupe off about 3 years ago and it was right at the begining of January and there was no mention of him having to pay the rest of the premium.

i thought this was the situation insurance companies had excess fees they make you pay it seems wrong for them to ask for the full policy maybe chris knott or adrian flux on this forum will be able to give you some clarity

most people get a new car and carry on with the policy bar reductions or increases based on the new car

most insurance policy's are mandatory 12 month contracts and i think it is more to do with the government, there was a massive scam going around where ppl got cover notes to insure cars then not bother insuring once the car is taxed

for example you buy a car for 200 quid and get it insured for 30 days, once taxed u carry on driving without insurance and if u smash it up u just walk away from it whilst the 3rd party is bent over backwards and loses no claims etc

it is much much harder to get away without having the car in your name driving without insurance

how many of you delayed sending the v5 off after buying a car so if you got flashed then u likelihood you wont get points, i know i use to do it :p

Alan, is your new car insured by a different company, or the one which paid out for the Astra?

It's a different company Matt.
Thanks for all the info guys I can see now from more points rather than mine.
So I guess I'll just need to pay up the Insurance Company then but when spoke to the Ombismun he did say I might not have to pay them he's calling me to let me know what is going to happen,so when he's called I'll let you guys know how I get on! ;)
Thanks Again for all the help and replies!!!
cheers.. Alan

Tell me about it, you seem to get punished for being a loyal customer now days, and all companies are interested in is new business.

Yea John you're totally right mate!
As you said I think when I hear from the Ombisman it'll be bad news so I'm just preparing myself for it luckily it isn't that much I owe them but as said I've been with the same company 3 years and it seems to stand for nothing.
I wish I had just stuck with Adrian Flux now as at least I would have got payed out for all the modifications even though the company I was with knew about them they weren't willing to pay out for them only the book price of a standard Astra Coupe not even an SE1 as when I was with Adrian Flux the company that they had me with added on £500 for the fact the Coupe was an SE1 and I would have got the cash for the H&R Springs & Dampers, exhaust system and all the other mods! :(
Thanks again everyone for letting me know all your thoughts on the situation as I said I'll wait for the Ombisman to get back to me and let you all know no doubt that I am having to pay the rest of the policy...
cheers.. Alan
