Don't these only work in a few inches of snow and have to removed on "cleared" roads?

I think they are OK to be used on clear roads, but they are only rated to 50kph from what I read last year when we were looking at getting some. I think they are better than having nothing at all, but I'd use them as a "get me home" kind of thing, and not use them to pop to the shops to get some milk (if you know what I mean??)
