I have made a start on porting the saab/ LSJ head, so two hours later and I have one combustion chamber done :roll:

I think this head might take a little while to complete, good job I'm in no hurry :lol:

Are you going to do your own machining for the +1mm valves or use an engineering company?

I have used my valve seat cutter to remove the excess material from the combustion chamber [so that it's ready for the bigger valves] but I will be getting the valve seats enlarged, the head skimmed and also hot washed in one of those fancy component cleaners by an engineering company.

I've not really got the time to do the valve seats, so outsourcing is the easy option.

also I might have to have the valve spring seats machined, the uprated springs are taller and without machining the head the coils will bind and thus snap the followers, oh the joys of tuning...

Vocky, just remember to cc your head too, you have no guarantee at all the 11:1 Wiseco + LSJ head will effectively lead to a 11:1 CR, I think I read somewhere the LSJ head is a fair bit more cc than the L61 one

the head will have slightly more cc than a standard lsj head as I have reworked around the back of the valves to allow more flow, but with the head skimmed and the dome pistons it should still be nearer 11:1 than 10:1, probably :lol:

I have reshaped around the back of the valves, this increases the flow, otherwise I removed the bare minimum to create a smooth combustion chamber.

it's very difficult to show with a pic, but I used my valve seat cutter to enlarge the area behind the valve (this is where the valve almost touches the head), then smoothed this into the original side sections

finished the exhaust port of cylinder 1 and started on the other inlet ports

here you can see where the inlet port needs reshaping, you need to open out the port so that the sides are the straight from the opening rather than angled inwards

this pic shows where to reshape the valve mouth, excess material is removed from each side so the sides are straight rather than curved inwards, you can also see how far back to go when sorting out the intake section of the port

Are you measuring the flow in the channels when you do the porting?

Big cross area in the channels doesn't necessary mean good flow etc...

Don't get me wrong, your work is really inspiring and impressive. Everything seems really sound in theory but have you actually validated it in a flow bench?

Even a flow bench means nothing for the swirl and the mixture quality, which is much more important than the raw flow...

I've learned from past mistakes what works and what doesn't, I aim to improve the flow in the obvious places, minor changes produce more results.

the inlet ports are simply corrected so that the sides are straight, the middle section is barely touched, the throat area has the main work done.

the exhaust is different, it is too small, I start by opening out the outlet to the same size as the gasket, then keeping the sides flat work back towards the throat area, then I open the throat area to match the outlet port.

I use various templates + measurements to ensure each port is the same shape as the rest, If I had a flow meter I would use it, but I don't 🙁
