Cracking on cast exhausts manifolds and turbine housings is due to thermomechanical fatigue this is caused by temperature gradients in the materal causing stresses as it heats up and cools down. So areas of thick or thin section heat up at different rates causing stresses in the materials and lead to cracking, we have this problem on the feed pads where the casting is poured on our tubine housing. The Z22SE engine is particually bad as because the manifold is at the rear of the engine it gets less cooling air flow than if it was the other way around, and the higher the max temp the worse the TMF will be.

I was reading in one of the classic ford magazines and it seems that Piper exhausts do custom exhaust manifolds has anybody heard anything about this? Apparently they require the car for approx 1 week.
They may be interested in making a jig if they knew the interest on this site.

I would be interested in this but I use my car every day and I don't live down south. This could be better than some of the other options a it is a well known manufacturer that produce systems for most of the cars on this site already. I can't believe they wouldn't be interested in possibly over 40 manifold sales from this site alone someone could get a bargain by supplying a development car!

bit late but i have an astra copue 2,2 and am willing to stick it in the piper garage for a few weeks as im constantly out of the country on business and on use my car when bk so plan it right and they can have it to get the jig set up hope it works out iv been looking every were for a manifold eddie

heres your answer to why the cams cost so much.

Well standard cams (ie direct operating) use a normal grinding wheel in the machine.

The Z22SE uses a roller rocker set up to move the valves. This means that the cam has a negative radius profile. In order to grind these we need to change the machine over to a smaller grinding wheel (4" Diameter). As its a smaller wheel it takes alot longer to grind. Hence the extra cost.

right i right them a littel letter so just waiting for there repley and ill ring them when im bk in london iv asked for them to see if they can make us up some cams and manifolds fingers crossed and hope they will be up for the job other wise will have to try some other companys tucker

get your name of the list as i am dealing with it all now. cams they already do in to which he said if we can get 5 people wanting to do it they will do them at £200 for each one saving over £100 😃
