Removing Balance Shafts

How did you do that? I tried that a long time ago and after beating on the bearing with a 5lb hammer gave up.

As I said I never had any luck when I tried, but if you or anyone else can do it that way then thats a nice simple solution. Have you tested it out yet to make sure it seals?

Tested without pressure (just filled some very fluid oil cleaning thing), but with pressure not yet, waiting for the bottom end to come back from reboring next week dunno..

if I went down the electronic pump route...

the chain would be removed, which would disconnect the two balance shafts and the water pump.

Would the water pump itself have to be removed or could it be left in place un altered? Same goes for the balance shafts, can u just leave them there unaltered?
I'd like to make it easily reversable (i.e. just putting the chain back on would put it back to normal.

I can't see any problem leaving the balance shafts in place. The water pump may cause problems though. I'm not sure if disconnecting the chain from the water pump may block the waterif the pump is not been driven notsure.gif

Yes you'd have to remove the water pump other wise it would cause too much restriction, a 12v electric pump will have enough trouble with the long pipe lengths in the VX.

I was going to fit two to my vx220, one pushing the water to the rad, the other pulling it from the rad.

BUT......

the lifespan of the electric water pumps is not very high, only a few hundred hours, I would only use them for track cars, for road use keep the mechanical pump cheers..

is anything special needed with regards to removing the mechanical water pump?
I assume that if I just remove it then water will leak everywhere, so is a blanking plate needed or something?
I was reading about these EWP from Davies Craig and it mentions something about the thermostat too? I suppose I would need to remove that too, is that easily done? where is it?

This is pretty new territory for me (like all the stuff I've done to the vx)

i have read every page on thsi now can some one show me on a pic and mark it out on which shafts i need to remove and where the water pump is. preff pic inside of engine. also on the shafts where do you cut them and what do they look like after they have been machined?

thanks for the vocky where do i get these all machined from? and would it be best to replace the water pump when doin it all?

you can just clean them up with a grinder and then a belt sander.

I get them turned cleaned on a lathe.

if the water pump is ok then leave it on.

and either..
Remove mechanical pump impeller from the pump shaft.. I suppose this is the bit that actually moves the water???
OR
Bypass the water pump pulley from the belt setup using a shorter belt.... i.e. take the chain off and throw it in the bin, with the side effect of f*king off the balancer shafts too?

I think I can do 1 and 3 with my eyes closed? showo..

Hi there

I’m considering using one of your EWPs on my car. It is a Vauxhall VX220 with a 2.2 I4 engine (Z22SE). The VX220 is based on the Lotus Elise, except with GM engine and body.

My question is, do you expect that the EWP110 pump will be enough to power this cooling system? YES - EWP110 HAS ENOIUGH FLOW AND PRESSURE FOR A 5LV8 PLUS ENGIONE SO IT WILL HAVE SPARE CAPACITY IN YOUR INSTALLATION EVEN GOING TO ADN FROM THE FRONT OF TH ENEENGIONE.

As you can see in the above link, the engine is at the rear, but the radiator is at the front, giving an unusually long water circuit. UNDERSTOOD

I would also like to ask, am I to understand that the only modification that I will need to do (besides fitting the pump), will be to remove the thermostat from the circuit, and disconnect the water pump chain (the z22se engine is mostly chain driven, and by disconnecting this chain, I will also be eliminating the “balancer shafts”, which zap a lot of power away from the engine), and the pump itself can be left in the circuit (It just wont be being driven anymore)? IF THE PUMP IS TH EONLY ITEM BEING DRIVEN BY THE CHAIN - YES THIS I SALL YOU NEED DO.

Wonder if I can do them engine in then? I don't need to use a hamer on the bearings as I have the BS delete kit mmmmmmmmmmm
