Gearbox Oil F23

What gearbox suitable oil can i use, prefer fully synthetic 1.55ltrs?
VX spec 19 40 768

Will put an additive in as well.

you need sae 75 W 80 if that makes a difference notsure.gif

Thinking heat, as anything warms up the viscosity increases and subsequently the the protection on metal to metal decreases. The lower viscosity would cater for cold starts and 90 for when warm.
I do give the car some stick and want to prolong the gearbox life.
Purely wanted the SAE VX recommend = 80W.

Same applies to the engine 10W/30W or 5W/30W The 30W relates to adequate protection when warm at normal road use.
Some Beemers run on 60W in this country.

Additive sorted just the thing i have been after for 13 years.

Where is the drain plug on the F23?

Found the filler plug and the oil level plug.
No yellow mark just a sticker ending ST. Do i overfill 0.5 ltr or not?

For reference removed oil level plug and lowered so level. 0.6ltrs drained out.
Should state jacking up passenger side more came out after.

Removed drain plug with 8mm allen key, 23mm to the right angle bend to clear subframe. 25.5mm will go in but a right pain to remove, took me ages.
A further 1.5 to 1.6ltrs came out.

Bar code sticker says G0201345028 ST under oil level plug.
So drained 2.15ltrs +/- 0.05ltrs.

Looked like ATF fluid that came out, generally clear when settled leaving metal/black particles in bottom of tray near on 69k.

Added 0.2ltrs of ZX1 will pass comment in a couple of days when i am convinced. Wheels span up at 40mph in second, never done that before. Used similar Fastex for over 14 years on other mechanical stuff but havent been able to get it for the last 12 years. Got another bottle coming for the engine after the front crank oil seal change.

Just a little update done 295 miles with fully synthetic 75W/90W, although cheap stuff i added the ZX1 200Mil, waste of around £45.
Not convinced, harder to get gears hot and cold, usually 2nd to 3rd when warm.
Dropped mrs off this morning, came back down motorway and give it some down slip road and left a C series for dead, trouble was i couldnt get 3rd. Either selector is going or wrong oil, but wasnt like it before.

So its having another gearbox oil change Monday night. Wasted £45 but it can go in my lathe gearbox.
Spoke to Opie Oils told them theres a mod i want fully synthetic together with related symptoms and offered Castrol SMX-S fully synthetic 75W/85W but ended up with the better Amsol MTF in two 1ltr cans dear but if it does the job and prolongs the life, fine less than £30 delivered.
Amsoil make some of the oils for GM.

AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) replaces GM part # 12345349, 12345577, 12377916 and 1052931 as well as Chrysler part # 4874464 and 4874465. It meets GM specifications 9985648, 9986105 and 9985535 and Chrysler MS-9224 and MS-9417.

Now this has me worried but consistent with whats come out:-
Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid **5W-30 **(MTF)
Kinematic Viscosity @ 100°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 9.6
Kinematic Viscosity @ 40°C, cSt (ASTM D-445) 47.1
Viscosity Index (ASTM D-2270) 194

hmmm appologies but i must be a bit thick...can someone in plain english tell me what is the correct/best gear oil, and explain how to change it, ie where everything is? Ta :oops:

Drain plug fooled me at first where it was or wasnt.

Is this worth doing on the gearbox on the 1600? Mine is very clunky going into 2nd and sometimes 3rd.

I would buy it from the dealers, not cheap :roll:

LOL Since last november when i bought this car ive come to realise that nothing is cheap where VX is concerned :roll:
