Which Head Unit?

I'm getting a new Head Unit for my Birthday in September, and would like a little help deciding. I've managed to narrow it down to 2 which I like:

Main thing I'm looking for is Ipod control, and to be able to control it via the steerting wheel.

Alpine IDAX001

Pioneer DEHP7900UB

Now, I really like the look of the Alpine, and the display for the IPOD. BUT! I don't like the fact it doesn't have a CD player
I also like the look of the Pioneer, and have had Pioneer before.

The Alpine is £20 more, so I'm undecided at the minute.

Always a personal choice I think, but Alpine all the way, Id love to have a CD free car, gotem everywhere.

Never owned one but have heard nothing but good things about them..

On the other hand i have owned a few pioners and they are great units!!

Well the general school of thought is to go for the Alpine, and I really do love the look. Price as well, looking a bit closer they will both cost £240, as the Pioneer one doesn't come with the USB cable, which is £20. I think I'm going to go for the Alpine

I've had a few Alpines and have an Alpine headunit fitted in my vx220 8)

Had a few Alpines as well got a D310 in now 7" touch screen with provision for aux inputs. Can plug in a hard drive.

If you have the room you can pick up a cd changer 6 disc that will play WMA, MP3 and the norm for as little as £60 for the current CHA-S634.
KCA-620M is a USB interface that will accept anything USB.
KCE-300BT/KCA-200BT are bluetooth adapters.
KCE-415I is a video interface to play back 5G.
KCE-236B for input of MP3 to full speed head unit.

Personally I like Pioneers but a friend of mine has bought this Alpine headunit and it is miles better than the pioneer (his previous one). The problem is scrolling through the iPod menu. It takes forever because the iPod interface on the pioneer is so slow. Hence if you have an even moderately large music collection it is a real pain to find a track. The Alpine gives you a larger, clearer screen therefore easier to find music. Plus to solve the CD problem you can always get a CD changer...

Know exactly what you mean Chris, its not like upping and downing through the tracks, it takes absolutely ages even with 157 mp3 on a cd. Practically unuseable when over 1100 songs on a dvd, it wouldnt be as bad if you could create folders or something. There again whilst you are driving.

If i wanted to go 20 or so songs into a cd i would be far better off opening the touch screen and manually scrolling through the songs, so be warned.

Pioneers from 12 years ago were good, never had one, had an Alpine TDA7537 AI Net nicked with 6 disc in boot on the drive! Luckilly left the Kefs £300 and Genesis DA110 amp £440 in 95/6.

Nope, my original thread about it said I wanted to get one. Now it's just over a month away from me getting a new one, I wanted to see what other people thought.

Yeah we found the best way to do it was to find the track you want then plug the iPod in and it will wake up with the wanted track. Or setup a playlist with what you want and off you go before the journey. As you say when driving it is lethal!!!

I voted Alpine as i have that headunit Matt, its a shame your so far away as you could have a had a play with it!

Thanks for the offer Andy 😃 They have the head unit in my local Halfords, so I've been having a look at it each time I go in there.

I'm definately getting the Alpine one, and will be ordering it in about a month. What other bits will I need harness wise to get it to work with the Steering Wheel controls?

Not sure with the mk4 as its totaly different to the mk5, the headunit should be plug and play, but an adaptor is needed for the steering wheel controls, i have seen one mentioned on another forum, if i find it ill let you know!

Wont get fast forward/rewind of tracks, it skips to next or start of last track, everything else ok as standard controls.
