block tester / block sniffer
if the head gasket is gone it puts gasses in to the water ways the gas's then move around in the cooling track
this pulls the gas's from the coolant and turns green/yellow if exhaust gasses are present

well it's been almost nine years since I purchased my vx220, there have been highs and plenty of lows :rolleyes:

Haven't driven it since the last post, which is a real shame.

I have ordered the last part required before mapping, just waiting for them to be made, perhaps it might finally get mapped ......

I fitted the CatCams last night along with some Saab cam sprockets. I decided to remove the GM Racing vernier cam sprockets and have since sold them.

I forgot to take any pictures :rolleyes:

However they made the stage 3 Comps look like standard cams :LOL:

Tickover now seems a little lumpy 😃

Time for mapping :eek:

I don't have a video of it with the comp cams, but the tickover was pretty smooth due to having a 2.5 bottom end.

Hopefully getting it mapped in February :eek:

the old cams were very mild for stage 3? 278* was stage 2 in the xev.
the dbilas cams I had were really rough idle binned them for shrick which are smooth idle 🙂

I decided it was about time it went for a test drive, so I dragged my vx220 out of my garage and went for a short test drive 🙂

It is certainly slightly more lumpy than before, however with the AFR staying above 14 (at full throttle) I thought it best to not go too far.

Initial feeling was not that much of a difference, but after driving my GTC vxr I feel my vx220 has lost some low down torque 🙁

I will reserve judgement until after the mapping because it still has the 2.2 (with stage 3 cams) map installed and that is not quite right for the current 2.5 engine (with stage 5 cams) 😃

im sure once mapped the lowdown torque loss will be improved but the upper rev range 🙂

Very interested in the outcome.
These 2.3/2.4/2.5 hybrid engines got my attention for a next winter project. More displacement is better for fitting larger turbo's.

If you can locate a 2.4 bottom end then you should be able to have some cheap fun 😃

Using Darton sleeves is quite an expensive route and I'm not sure I would build another 2.5 engine - due to the increased costs over a factory 2.4 bottom end.
