Sirair2007 Hi everybody. Recently i bought an astra bertone with a knocking engine as a winter project. What i found till now is that the exhaust cam holder screws got loose. 3 of them more exactly. The cam shaved the bearings on the holders and one screw is broken. what would be the best direction to go? I was thinking of retaping the hole with the broken screws put everything back together and getting an engine flush and wait and see if it works. This would be the cheapest option. Now i am open to sugestions . Engine code is z22se 2.2 petrol.
figo126 id drop the sump , have a look in the sump and pick up pipe to see how metal is in there, ,, could get some more caps, check how good or how loose they fit, if its damaged the head it will probably be scrap,,,,,,,
Sirair2007 Droped the sump. No metal bits inside. i called vauxhall asked for the cam holders and bolts and surprise. they do not do them anymore. So where i can at least find them bolts and some bearing caps? i looked in e-bay but did not find anything.
vocky the usual reason for the cam caps suffering damage like you describe is the oil restrictor below the cylinder head is blocked, thus the head has suffered from oil starvation and generally are then scrap. What happens is a piece of the oil filter breaks away and travels through the engine, normally it blocks the chain oil jet but sometimes it goes to the top of the engine.
Sirair2007 Today went to a garage and they will change the head. now my concern is they said the head is coming from a 56 plate vectra. On that year i am sure the engine is z22yh..So are they interchangeable? Starting the engine with the cover off it spits oil only on the chain side on one cylinder not on whole engine.
Sirair2007 In the end i decided is better to do it myself. i ll get a head and skim it. new timing chain and balance shafts chain and all the kit. now there is a water pump there. not leaking but should i replace that too? what else should be replaced down the road?
vocky water pump is easy whilst the cylinder head is removed, so certainly worth doing. Other than that you have it all covered with both chain kits (y)
Sirair2007 Gaskets? Throttle body gasket? on the injectors one of it is full of sludge? those o-rings should be changed?
vocky tb gasket and injector O rings are re-usable, I normally buy this kit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-VECTRA-ZAFIRA-2-2-Z22SE-HEAD-GASKET-SET-BOLTS-GENUINE-VAUXHALL-/200736018541?hash=item2ebccc906d:m:m8Z9Wx2VsOifHQzdmWLsgug
Sirair2007 Any seals on the engine? like crankcase etc? it ll be akward to change everything and forget a 2 quid seal 🙂
figo126 did you find out which engine it is ,,, ive got a z22yh head lying around £50 if any good to you pal,,,,,,,,,, which will come with cam caps,,,,

figo126 ive got a z22se also ,but its got a lump missing near the egr valve can put some pics on later if interested,,
figo126 it came off a running car , which due to not getting regular oil change, the guides broke and the chain jumped, bending all 16 valves, so would be a bare head needing valve guides, £20,,,,,,,
Sirair2007 Thanks mate but i am looking for a complete head. just to skim it and throw it in the car.
Sirair2007 Problem. the intake manifold does not get out. disconected the dipstick screw. bolts and the two nuts. still does not work out. maybe the torx screws witch hold the nuts are in the way ? And another question. i have a pipe. from i think egr right into the manifold. in front of the tb airflow.. can that be blanked or something? and get rid of the egr?
figo126 yes mate undo the torx screws it will come out easier , but the wires are connected to the manifold which holds it back,,, there was a link for blanking the egr on here somewhere 2 metal blanking plates a bung for the inlet manifold but you will need order the egr delete wires to plug into your wiring,,
Sirair2007 Wiring? manifold? did not see any wiring holding her there. i ll see tomorrow when hopefully i pull off the head.
