When the head comes off, what are you replacing?

The heads gonna want pressure testing, a little skim

Valves reseating n new valve stem seals

what about pistons, piston rings?

Chains obviusly want doing.

n depending on miles it might be worth doing the water pump.

Pistons, piston rings, valve stem seals and timing chain are a deffinate to be done (well attempted to be done by Me) and whatever comes up that need's replacing along the way Dave I'm just going to take My time and try not to rush things so in a way it's become a bit of a project for Me and a big one at that as I haven't done nothing like this before.
I've even put My car toward's the corner of the driveway and told the other half it's out of bounds and I won't be putting it back on the road until it's all completed. As I'm looking for work though this could take Me some time to get the cash together for part's to complete but I don't mind walking or jumping on the odd bus when I have to and hopefully some work will come up in the next week or so which means the cash will be coming back in so things should be a little easier.

Good luck with it all mate, I'm sure that, given time and patience you'll get it sorted. It may feel like a daunting task but you'll be surprised how much you'll learn along the way. The fact that you are prepared to tackle it is a good sign, given that mind set you'll do just fine I think.

Hi have a look on carpartconnexions there are some cheap Genuine parts balance chain £63@ the min I normally type in 2.2 in the search engine and see what comes up. Really good site for Genuine parts.

Working on the car I feel as crazy as that guy look's in that picture Dave. Thank's Graham & I have bookmarked the site ( http://www.carpartsconnexion.com/default.asp ) and will take a look tomorrow.

Just a quick update of how things have gone today.
Struggled a bit to get the injector's out today as the one nearest the chain seemed proper wedged in, and once I had got them out the ends of them all were covered in a light coloured soily/sandy type of textured gunk nothing like the thick dark sticky gunk I cleaned the other week when I done the throttle body and was wandering if this is normal. I can't believe how empty already the engine bay is looking with the inlet manifold now off. I also noticed today whilst that more or less everywhere I looked down toward the bottom of the engine it was covered in oil and all the underneath was totally covered in thick black oil. Getting into the oil filter was a bit of bugger with not having the right size ring spanner but managed to get the lid of to find bits of metal in there (don't think this is a good sign somehow).

Not good, looks like it's melted a piston. Must have got real hot at some point to do that.

number 4 look's well fecked and I can actually get My little finger in the hole (top right of picture).
Inside number 2 and 3 there's nothing stuck to the sides with no visible scoring and feel's smooth

Oh dear that doesn't look good, spose it can all be swapped out!

You will need to see if it needs over sized pistons/rings.

but id go with a full set of pistons and rings atleast

id say best person to talk to about any parts(maybe used for budget purposes)

it would be easier to replace the whole bottom end tbf then sort the head out

i fetched one from the scrap yard for the crank it was in the same condition and considered as scrap altho the crank i wanted was good
the bore was too far gone

failed alternator and injector stuck in low voltage was what i put it down to

any ideas roughly how much I'm looking at to replace the bottom end please

there not that expensive to buy a used one but then you have to consider age and use
there were some brand new bottom ends floating about on ebay but it think they have all gone now

ive got a load of parts in the batcave but i dont think i would consider them to be used in an engine there all from salvage

I will have a search about online tonight to see what's available evocarlos thank You, I'm wondering now if it might be easier to remove My engine completely and save for a replacement engine

Evening... Great post always admire people who don't mind having a go at jobs like these!
If it's any help to you Ive got a bottom end for z22se... Among others ... Pulled it from a friends yard who breaks vectra's / astras...
The head had a broken egr housing so head has been removed.... If I remember correctly he said only had done 75k .... Maybe of some use to you?
