Hi, I've been here quite a lot over the last year or two and decided to seek some advice if anyone can help. I think I may of broken my z22yh by plenty oil in sump but not on cams I've done more googling than I can take now ha ha, anyone experienced this problem before? Thanks for your time

Hello and welcome to the site 🙂

oil starvation in the head can be caused by a piece of old oil filter working it's way around the oil ways until it reaches the head gasket, where it blocks the oil feed to the cylinder head (n)

Not saying that is your exact problem, but a lack of lubrication to the cams is usually that.

Hi thanks for the quick responses, it's def overdue oil and filter change (possibly overdue on life too now) I've started trying to find out if there's any signs of anything lying around so took filter out, black as the ace of spades but at least intact, dropped sump off, again black oil but thin and no signs of sludge or anything like that, couple bits of small plastic in there and a rolled up shard of metal but God knows where they from, took rocker cover off and seems a tad dry esp exhaust 4 and you can see alu burr a bit

Wonder if the bits of plastic were/are from the timing chain guide as I've been told it can beak up. I suppose it's just as possible that a piece of that has got round and blocked something. Might be worth trying to flush the engine with an oil flush, clean out the sump thoroughly and then put fresh oil and filter in it. Lets hope it's nothing more sinister. I'm sure one of the guys will be along with some other ideas.

Thanks chain still seems very tight but obv guide could still be broken, it's just past its 10 yr mark so no spring chicken and was due chains, it was misfiring and driving a bit rough on way back home but through up no faults, parked it up, started the next day fine and done a short trip no bother but did notice a bit ticking just over the engine note which quickly got louder and it was turned off, it then struggled to turn as if it was seized so I quickly whacked a bit oil down filler in a panic effort to prevent death...........I tried again, it turned more freely but did not fire and drained battery quite quickly so I presume was tight top end still.

From what I've been told if the timing chain jumps a couple of teeth it can stop the engine running as they have a cam sensor on the Z22YH engine. If you have nothing to confirm the chains have been done then at 10yrs old (averaging 10K a year) then the chains are due for replacement. I've just had mine done by @[deleted] who I can highly recommend to do them. If your lucky then you might have caught it before it is terminal, the best person to talk to would be Carl (I've tagged him in this so hopefully he'll see and reply).

While you have the sump off, id get the rocker cover off n have a look at the chain guides.

hows the oil pickup pipe looking?

if all is clean and well.

I would buy some cheap oil and run some engine flush through it n drop n replace with new quality oil.

Rocker is off mate, can't see any signs of damage to guides from what I can see down slot, bottom end looks ok and next to nowt in sump pickup mesh all clear etc, just seems to have ran dry where cams sit into head

Get some pics down the front of the chain slot, if u know what I mean, just to be safe but if theres nowt in the sump the guide should be fine.

id say sump n rocker back on and chuck some cheap oil or some old oil if its useable and get a flush in n see what happens from there.

It's all looking like it's been very dark oil in there like an old chip pan fire, and one very dry end

Obv it's been dry as sticks up there, if that's been like that because of a blockage from the old tractor oil would that prevent it from starting though? Cos it turns but won't fire

I could be wrong but if the yh engine jumps a couple of teeth on the timing the engine will not fire up.

Looks like this engine has been rather neglected, with either infrequent oil changes or being run with low oil levels.

The fact you found some plastic and metal bits in the sump sounds ominous.
As mentioned, at 10 yrs old it's time for new chain kits as the guides become brittle. 🙂

Did you keep the bits that came out of the sump, if so any chance of a pic.

Yeah its not been changed enough definitely, it always does very short trips too which don't think helps, never been low on oil but possibly been restricted for a while and not fully blocked to the extent that's made the noticeable failure, I've had mind on other things so hands up its my own fault.
I'll get some pics of the little pieces which I did keep, when vans back, couple bits was sealant from sump seal, but there was a couple little other pieces stuck in pick up

Even if you turn the engine so it's at TDC on No 4 the coloured links on the chains are very unlikely to line up, as once setup they only come back into alignment after many hundreds of turns. 🙂

I'd still be able to judge with cam lobe position wouldn't i????? I'm not sure like it's all uneducated guesswork :whistle:
