Hi there,im completely gutted bought a lovely 2006 vecra SRi 2.2 direct ran sweet for 6 months then all of a sudden the cam belt decided to jump teeth damaging the engine. Had it towed to garage only for them to tell me five days later that it will cost me £950 to put it right. Jeez...what a nightmare! Been advised to scrap my lovely car (with full service history on 90,000 miles) for a measly £200 anyone on here got a better solution? Thanks in advance

it can be put right depending on damage and skill or location.

how fast was you going when the timing chain went? has the garage stripped any parts off?

either way it will need a timing chain kit, wile your there its good practice to do the balanceing chain kit aswell
then it will be a head gasket set and then depending on damage it may be worth just buying a head, i think @[deleted] is selling a few good heads cheapish, so u could just bolt 1 on n away you go

No Dave, wasn't moving at all had just filled up at petrol station tried to start the car and crash bang wallop no engine I'm not a mechanic so I didn't have a clue what had happened then I had to deal with an irate petrol station manager for blocking his pump waited for the rac who then towed me to one of their accredited garages

id talk to carl then, there has been times where there was no damage atall so just do the timing chain n balance chain kits n be good as new, where abouts are you?

Thanks for all your advice Dave. I had no idea about the problems with these 2.2 engines before I bought my car :-(

there not problems its being miss informed, vauxhall say they last the lifetime of the engine(which they dont) if they said change oil say every 5000 miles n change the chain kits at about 75000 miles like a cam belt these engines would be great

We are practically neighbours :-) the car was serviced regularly but I had no idea about the engine problem if I had I would have had the chain changed

To be honest, it's been a fantastic car from the moment I bought it to the moment it died on me I wouldn't hesitate to get another vectra anyone got a VXR for sale 😉 only joking...the insurance would cost twice as much as the car hahaha

are you mechanical? if you are u can find out some of the damage

No Dave, I'm not a mechanic can only just check the oil and antifreeze wish I had have been then I might not be in this awful situation right now am at woodseats

They did a visual inspection at the garage that the rac towed me to said chain had slipped and there was valve damage and possible damage to hydraulic tappets total cost £850 +another £100 if tappets are damaged

i think it will need
checking for valve damage which can be done without removing much, if there intact its just a case of replacing the chains.

its normally valves n guides that get damaged, but it can be fixed for alot less than that. if i was you i would pm evocarlos hes the man when it comes to reviving these engines. hes done a few where the chain has snapped or slipped n brought them back to life
