Hi Guys
Can anyone help with my on going saga bought it as non runner was told timing chain problem but guess what replaced chain timed it up and non start. Low miles 53k guy replaced crank sensor then gave up but now I can get it running no problem by unplugging cam sensor car starts and runs sweet ( in garage) plug sensor back in no start. Replaced sensor still the same checked timing again spot on engine sweet and compressions good. Got tech 2 tool now no codes at all thinking ecu any ideas? Exhaust sprocket is a forged piece so what could it be except wonky ecu or faulty timing pulse from sprocket? ANY HELP FROM SOMEONE IN THE KNOW GREATFULLY APPRECIATED!!! Sorry but driving me crazy ps its an auto box.

hmm i guess if the cam sensor is not present it uses the knock sensor for timing as a backup

firstly have you checked cam sensor connection for voltage ?, secondly if there is voltage have you tapped into the sensor connector and get someone to turn the engine over while you check for a pulse

guess you could be right never thought about knock sensor but problem stems from cam sensor and timing is spot on has anyone got a clue where I should go next! many thanks

U need to get a scope on the cam sensor to see if its showing any signal.........

have you checked compression ?

Or did you whip the head off and replace the bent valves ?

strange you have no codes at all? could be damaged ecu? with tech2 you should be able to see signals to and from all sensors? don't know how advanced diagnostics are with tech2 as only watched it being used.
we had a similar fault on a machine at work, turned out to be timing out on cam by 1 tooth. came up with a fault code of camshaft signal mismatch.

Hi guys sorry for the delay in reply however unplugged cam sensor and checked for voltage with ignition on. Centre pin to outer pin showing 5 volts, centre pin to other outer pin showing 12 volts. Does anyone know if this seems unusual and possibly cause of problems? I watched the link above and this doent seem right. Engine is definitely mechanically sound, had a play with tech2 but not familiar with the menu options maybe someone out there can give me more information? Cheers

if you have a tech2

do me a favour and unattach the air flow meter from the intake hose and move it away whilst still plugged into the ecu

see if she starts up with the cam sensor plugged in

Ben trying to start the car with air filter assembly and air flow sensor removed still get the same non start. Unplug cam sensor and it starts after about 3 seconds. Remove cam sensor and leave it plugged in and car starts in about 3 seconds. Plug back into timing cover and it just turns over and over no fire. You still get a spark at plugs but my guess is firing at no 4 cyl instead of 1 (on exhaust stroke) as even easy start does nothing when sensor plugged in. Can cam sensor somehow be out of sync with crank sensor? read document but a bit unsure where to go next, is anyone good with tech2 who can advise me how to use it to do further checks?🙁

is there any other sensors using the same connector as the cam sensor ?, you might of got them mixed up when doing the chain

by unplugging the sensor you are forcing the engine into limp mode as it is a major sensor thus it should throw up a code when reading the ecu

your telling me it is not throwing up a code nor is the engine light coming on then you go figure

are you 100% sure the timing on the main chain is right ? the last 2 z22yh's ive done chains on were non runners and both were with the timing out one by 2-3 teeth and the other about 7-8 teeth
both show no eml for the timing out
but did put the eml on with the airflow meter unplugged but ran fine

Thanks for the info but turned engine loads of times till both grey links met up with the marks on the camshaft sprockets and mark on crankshaft pulley lined up with timing case mark. I have to say did this without any special tools but 100 percent sure the marks correspond. Any thoughts on not using special tools? Also checked all plugs nearby and cam sensor plug is unique ie correct. Engine sounds fine when running although guess its limp mode, guy I bought it from said very hard to start but started occasionally im thinking same fault still present ' possible ecu?' Has anyone heard of removing crank sensor and turning engine a full turn with ignition on, theory being spark is going to number 4 cylinder instead of 1. This would explain no firing even with easy start when cam sensor is plugged in. Im sorry if this is long winded but ignition timing appears to be miles out question is why???? Is it possible ecu is wonk? Cheers guys🙁

no pending codes showing on tech 2 just same as earlier posted all I can say is car doesn't like cam sensor plugged in so problem seems like the signal it gets or the signal the ecu sends is no good

hi yes tech 2 says camshaft sensor open circuit when unplugged and starts, also says same when I pull it back out cover but leave plugged in. had it starting today fitted in cover and switching off it sometimes starts again if quick with the key. leave it a few seconds and it just turns over leaving no codes. you would guess faulty sensor but tried a second hand one off ebay exact same. doubt its wiring as consistent each time. any thoughts?
