TonyH I think I have got the tensioner sorted it is the z20net one? Do I stick it in as pictured? Does that bit with the o-ring on go in too or take off?
evocarlos it doesn't pop out like the old one put the piston back in and re install the cir-clip you will need to remove the piston then reset the barrel refit the circlip then make the decision if your going to fit it un-activated or activated https://z22se.co.uk/threads/project-freeze-my-ass-off-rear-poly-bushs-astra-g.22133/page-30#post-1202098 heres vockys pic of all 3 types of tensioner apart https://z22se.co.uk/threads/tensioner-how-stuff-works.18355/#post-1165687 to fit it un activated you will need to use a bar to activate it once in the engine as per the printed guide you have there 🙂 to fit it activated you will need to turn the crank clock wise to bring all the slack of the chain to the rear rail the with a good push and a twist the tensioner will fit activated this way
evocarlos much better ^ 🙂 unactiaveted the piston will slide in and out freely activated the piston will be sprung loaded the sprung loaded part adds tension to the chain during start up while the oil pressure builds up failure to have the tentioner activated before 1st start up can be devastating and make the chain jump i would say its one of the most important steps to fitting the chains other that making sure its in alignment
TonyH I have put that in and the chain feels tight, so is it okay? This how it all looks now..... Got this bolt left over, should there be a spare? Got two in the black rail, one bottom of tensioner, one in oil jet, that's it isn't it?
evocarlos some times you get spares my advice would be after turning the engine over by hand 2 full turns of the crank recheck alignment (the colored links wont meet up again after turning not for a few 1000 turns anyway) refit the oil pump/timing cover and crank pulley fill with oil then turn the engine on the starter with rocker cover and the coil pack still removed keep cranking the engine on the starter until you see a bead of oil on the chain and oil at the cam caps this will make sure there is oil in all the right places before the 1st real start priming the system as it were 🙂
vocky the bolt is for the upper chain guide, there should be two of them, they hold on the angled plate from the top of the engine - between the two cam chain sprockets
vocky TonyH said: this better? how to tell if activated or not? that is activated (y)
TonyH I turnt it by hand twice it all looks right still. 🙂 Just cleaning the surfaces of oil pump now. Does the gasket go on dry or should I run a bit of oil on the seal?
evocarlos i normally just wipe the 2 matting surfaces down then wipe the gasket down to so i do it dry 🙂
TonyH Right all on and done the starter motor test and all seems well!! 🙂 Here is tdc alignment after two tunrs by hand And here it is coated in sweet oil 🙂 Will now start putting the rest on
evocarlos TonyH said: Put in reverse gear to do up the crank pulley? big screw driver threw the pulley so it lock on to the oil pump cover be sure to get it on one of the big steps personally as im doing more and more chains now i made a tool to hold the pulley
TonyH It lives! But got an EML on. I think it is probably to do with the starter motor running earlier though as I had the grey and brown relays in the boot out, just the yellow starter motor relay in. Vocky? It all sounds fine and nothing is leaking though so I'm sure there is no problem. Thank you everyone for the help I am so pleased to have achieved this.

TonyH I read the code p1512 to do with throttle body, cleared it, not come back on. 🙂 I reckon it was from turning ignition without the boot relays plugged in. Clam back on next week then hopefully can start driving the damn thing.
