Non starter / chain changed diagnostics help please

Hi Sandy, I know where the fuel rail is but I don't know how to identify the parts you're referring to. Do you have any piccys?

You can see yourself the plugs are pretty filthy they either need cleaned or more than likely replaced the camshaft lobes look correctly set at no.4 piston if no.1 and no.4 pistons are at the top then timing should be okay
your video is set to private so it is un-watchable
You should post pictures of crankshaft sprocket marks and closer pics of camshaft sprockets it would help everyone to see it better

The timing tool is locked into place so I'm assuming that's all the proof needed that the timing is ok. The marks won't line up now as the engine has been cranked. The plugs do spark as I've checked but maybe not strong enough for the engine to fire.

It does not look like the coloured link on the exhaust sprocket is lined up with the arrow on the sprocket so that means the other coloured links cannot be lined up properly bit late with my reply i was typing as you were posting but if they all lined up it should be okay i would say

As mentioned after cranking they won't line up again for "X" x 100 revolutions or so but were spot on when the job was done

I would say its spot on then. have you activated the chain tensioner this can also be a problem i think your chain looked a bit loose in the video

I did activate it but as I don't have a reference to how tight a "good un" would be it seemed wise to post a vid as a reference in the quest to get this sorted (y)

Just helping to be extra cautious it should be ready then .Wire brush the plugs before you put them back and think about investing in a new set

Hey IDI bank holiday weekend was hard to get suitable spark plugs, am going to grab the other car when the missus gets in from work and pop out and get some. Just topped the battery back up to full charge.

I'm also going to count the links between the timing marks later this afternoon just to make 110% sure the crank sprocket hasn't jumped a tooth. I've also got the missus to pick up a compression tester in case all else fails.

Maybe not. 2 teeth in advance of the mark on each sprocket. Should be timed properly then 🙂

Right, off to get some new plugs.

Everything screwed back together and engine tries to catch but still won't start. Compression test tomorrow 🙁

i take it , it was running before you started the job?.

If so, for peace of mind, take it off and start again is the way forward and get all the links lined up correctly... one thing i did notice is the colour of the links, they are old style oe colours, they now use blue and purple. and have done for 6+ yrs

It was running, just had minor cold starting issues and a slight rattle at cold start. The FAI kit was bought from here and I have checked, checked, checked and checked again, before and now after fitting the chain. I did find the intake chain guide snapped off at the hidden bolt so it was definitely a job that needed doing.

This also happened to me the guide had broken at the bit you would put the bolt through at the hidden bit on the head i also have the fai chain this is the colour of the links i think the genuine vauxhall ones have the purple and blue links.
I would do as daz suggested and start again line it all up properly and also use thread locker on the bolts if you havent already used it .I done my chains without it the bolts were coming loose before car was back on the road i only noticed as i had a dodgy idle and thought it could have been the timing that was out so with cover removed i could see some of the guide rail bolts had come loose

So compression test done and after lots of googling I'm not 100% sure on the correct interpretation of the results other than they are slightly low. Vocky has said minimum should be 163: https://z22se.co.uk/threads/cylinder-compression.3768/

My results:

1: 130 psi
2: 110 psi
3: 130 psi
4: 130 psi

So I don't think that I have any valve damage :woot: but the timing could be slightly out. I'm recharging the battery so I can double check the results.

IDI I take it yours started first time after you changed the chain?
