My car sounded a bit like that like a diesel , before it finally packed in, wouldn't start, think the chain had jumped a few teeth, because when I took cam cover off found a couple of cam followers had broke and lying out of place, so I think the timing was out and poss bent a few valves , was getting spark and fuel delivery, but wouldn't startup in the end.
