I got it looked at by another garage and this is the email which was sent to me, because I got that bottom end rebuild by a engine place in durham and was thinking of going to court.
With reference to the lower engine block that brought to me for my opinion regarding the cause of the engines failure.
Number 3 con rods big end bolt has sheered resulting in catastrophic engine failure and the bock being breathed.
Whilst it is possible that one of the bolts may have been fitted incorrectly or over tightened etc its very difficult to establish this as fact as the damage caused is so extensive.
Inspecting the remaining pistons and in particular it was noted that there was pick up of varying degrees on all the main bearings, some being very bad which indicates that there has been an oil supply or oil pressure issue that has resulted in this damaged with number 3 being the first to fail. This could well have been caused during fitment or at engine start up or alternatively with incorrect oil introduced to the engine which has resulted in the oil film breaking causing the pick up.
The crank shaft journeys appeared to be clean and free however there are the expected signs of pickup on the journals too.
One other point that was noted was excessive use of black silicone, a great deal of which was hanging loose on the inner edges on the sump. Further inspection of the oil pump etc would be recommended to see if any of this excess has caused any blockage to the pump or associated galleries.
I hope that this has helped,
Kind regards
