Possible Cam Chain Failure?

your only option is to replace the engine, remember to replace the chain kits (use the new ones from your dead engine).

Once oil pressure is lost the cam bearings eat away, these are part of the head, also the big end bearings go and wear away the crank, so nothing remains worth keeping from the current engine (n)

Oh My God! Really?
The mechanic is still quite confident and he's not charging me more for the extra parts he's fitting. I've managed to find only 1 oil pump and it's for a z22se, will this fit my z22yh engine? He's stripped the pump down and found the cogs or whatever they are totally ruined, could he just use the cogs from the one i'm going to buy and put them in the outer casing of mine? Or should he replace the whole thing with the z22se pump, obviously if it fits?

z22se oil pump will fit straight on, not worth the hassle to swap the insides over because the oil pressure relief valve will probably be ruined and that cannot be swapped over as it's part of the casing

Ah right, well we put it on and it's still the exact same. You mentioned that the bearings would be shot now, how come?
i've priced up a new engine, and it's at least £600, plus around £500 fitting it on top of the £500 current garage bill that's owed. I have found a bottom end and a head for £300, is that effectively a new engine? I've found two links for video's on youtube that sound exactly the same as mine, and they fixed it by changing the oil pump.

The noise still comes from the very far left of the engine bay.

Hate to say it, but to me that sounds like a bad bottom end knock, as Vocky said, bearings running without oil lubrication quickly fail and wear. Once they have, even a new oil pump won't develop enough pressure as it all leaks out past the damaged bearings. A replacement engine is the way forward, down here you might get one with unknown mileage for about £200 (seen running) and after changing the chain parts over you should have a reliable lump.

All of that work needs to be fastidiously clean though.

Oh great, I can't afford to do that, looks like it's getting scrapped 🙁

I'll have a word with the mechanic after the holidays and see if he's thought of anything, otherwise it's a waste of £1800.

easy to check, drop off the sump and whip off the big end bearing caps, only one hours work to do that. If they are damaged then the crank will be worn, thus new bearings will end up looking the same.

Another engine would be about £500 for a z22yh.

Right, what would be involved in an engine rebuild if it was the big end bearing?
