z22se, Vauxhall only supplying cool running theromstats?

wanted to get some feedback on this, changed my CTS and stat over the weekend with genuine GM parts, flushed and changed coolent and noticed my car now just about getting to 80 degrees unless stuck in traffic where it will get just over 90 degrees (half way on the guage) and the fan will kick in as normal.
before i changed the stat the gauge was always in the middle no matter the driving conditions which i feel is optimum operating temp, it appears after some initial head scratching that i have been supplied a cool running stat (82degrees instead of the normal 94 degrees) this coupled with me doing a lot of short journeys is hammering my consumption and cant be doing the car a lot of good (bore wash!) running rich. I bought this up with the supplier and they said gm superceeded the standard stat with the lower temp one, i just cannot understand why?

new part no. 12622410 the one i took out was non genuine so i dont have a part number though confusingly it did have 82 stamped on the bottom, but the car definately ran at 90+ degrees so can only assume it was a bit stuck ?

Have seen this previously on here, parts were purchased from AutoVaux, and the cool running was provided.

interesting, did anyone manage to get the correct part? as i really dont want a cool running stat i dont have a turbo or live ina tropical country.

Fantastic thanks for the link i did loads of online searches and did not find that, i can see why autovaux stock them as im sure poeple ask for them thinking its a performance upgrade as some websites market them, but in reality very few cars really need them especially in this country considering yesterday it was a really hot day yet i was driving about with the needle hovering under the 80 degree mark this is dangerously close to the "choke on mode" meaning overfueling , bad MPG, and possible bore wash, and seems totally pointless in this country unless you are going to put a fan swith in with a lower temp as well, as 90% of overheating in normal cars occurs when stationary (traffic) and a cool stat will not help that at all! maybe of use in cars with cooling problems or high states of tune but on a standard car it does more harm than good.

Happened me, autovaux sent the cool running stat. She consistly sits at 82 on the move and would rise to around 90 if idling for a while.

Fuel consumption not effected, getting around 33-35mpg

So all-in-all, i disagree completely with your opinion there.

ok not sure why you need to "completely disgree" seems a bit comfrontational? i am just stating a fact that the engine is now running a lot cooler than it used to or in fact needs to, and raising a concern that it "could" cause undesirable side effects, in a really cold season i will be interested to see if there are any side affects (doubt it) however as i said previously unless you are going to put a fan switch in which activates at a lower temp its a totally pointless mod as you will still be hitting 90+ degrees in traffic so all it does is make the engine run cooler on the move which has no advantage in this country and i think there was some thermodynamic reason why 90+ degrees was decided as the optimum running temp for an engine but ill have to go away and find evidence to supprt that as i cant really remember.

Could be worse, you could have a MK5 Astra and have no idea what temperature the engine is running at, until it's too late and the warning lights come on :thumbdown:

ah yes ive seen that in the new BMW as well, their reasoning being that the ecu control everything blah blah but as we all know its very useful for identifying issues and monitoring general operating status of the car, i like to know if my car is running a little warmer or colder than usual even if its not enough to trigger the ECU warning lights as it could point me early on to issues!! I guess this is just the gereral way things are going with cars less user involvement.

well just had confirmation from autovaux that this is the only part vauxhall list for the z22se now and they have checked through TIS and contacted Luton to see if any other updates are required, they are also going to change the listing on their website to reflect the new details as it still states the old part number and 94 degrees.

I bought a genuine Vx thermostat recently for my Zafira. I found that it was running cooler than expected (just over 80 on the gauge) so i took it out and put another good used 1 in. Now running better and it opens about 94/95 deg.

At first i thought i had bought a dud but after reading this it now explains why

also don’t forget the oil has a optimum temp which is why we (should) gently warm our engines before thrashing them there is also a optimum cylinder temp, I realise to most it may be of little consequence but running the engine this cool "could" have adverse long term effects, I plan to purchase a after market stat at the higher temp. don’t suppose any one knows who makes them for vaux?

I use a Courtenay Cool Stat. Mine is upto 85ish within minutes. The engine runs at 90` around town but it doesn't take long to bring the fan in once in traffic. Once I get hold of that Nimbus G11 between the manifold and water pipe, I'm hoping there maybe a slight decrease in engine temps.

I still don't like this stat that's fitted, it causes mayo under the cap and on the dipstick in the winter months, on the motorway it went under 80 this weekend where before it sat perfect at 90 no matter what speed or how hard the car was driven.

yeah i will definately be sourcing a pattern part from a decent manufacturer before the winter months, especialy as my daily commute is 2.5-3 mail each way.
