Piper four branch manifold problem

for some time now i have been trying to assertain where the exhaust has been blowing from.
all of the things i have done have not worked so i decided today to take the manifold off and have a look.
i purchased this originaly from courtenays, and i think it is a chris tullet one? i think johnny said, anyway at first glance it looked perfectly ok.
when i was removing the studs before i took it off i sprayed them up liberaly with WD, and when i took it off i noticed that there was some WD INSIDE the manifold.

so i sprayed some more into the centre, and low and behold the liquid was inside the manifold.
this is before i sprayed on the outside

and this is after

it turned out that there wasnt any weld in the middle part of the manifold
so i jumped on the train to redhill and got my mate at RSR to weld it up for me

the weld is right in the very middle

so it just shows you that even if you pay out £400+ for something, you dont nessesarily get a perfect product!!

put it back on again and bingo, all good...no blowing!

Have you called Mark or Jon about this? Also, have you got a complete picture of the manifold?

Does it look exactly like this...

dont have a pic of it all but yes its the same mate and i am going to call them tomorrow to let them know.
bit late for me to realy do anything now tho as its more than a year old but it does explain alot now why ive not been able to find the blow.

That's quite a surprise, as I've always thought that Chris Tullett was supposed to be the dogs danglies??

maybe its a one off?? dont realy know anyone else who has had one of these.
i would have thought tho that a product like this, being custom made would have had some sort of pressure test to ensure all areas had been welded, but obviously not!

spoke to mark about it ans let him know about the fault.to be fair not alot i could do now as ive had if for sometime now.
Also car has to go back up in december as it is running crap around 2.5-3.5k

in the pic there is a crack around one of the runners, I expect that is why it was blowing.

The manifold is welded on the inside so that is why it appears not to have been welded on the outside :thumbup:

yeah it is but if you look inside around the outside there are holes between the pipes, so they realy should have filled those spaces dont you think?? as this is where it leads directly to the outside where the weld wasnt sufficient.
when i sprayed outside it did seem to flood in through those holes between the pipes inside

also could this not cause turbulance inside the manifold??

must have to admit i didnt notice that crack so well spotted.this prob didnt help i guess, but there wasnt anything obvious on the outside.

welding the outside should have fixed the leaks :thumbup:

well piper discontinued their manifolds for no reason

as for chris tullet this is the first i have heard about

also remember poundy has a SC z22se

Yes I remember now his is SC'd. Mine won't have anywhere near the flow going through it being N/A.

Chris Tullet make a SC manifold with 3" header pipes but you would have to have a custom downpipe to fit it to. Its for applications 270bhp+.

I'm going for the N/A variant. £501 inc. VAT.

They also do a ceramic coated manifolds.

noticed it is blowing again today after a trip to cornwall!!! so this one i have no good for s/c cars
