a duff MAP sensor will cause problems 🙁
well was sent on a bit of a wild goose chase with some fault code interpretations (checking every sensor in the circuit for voltage issues) but got there in the end; pottsey came over again and very generously allowed me to take the throttle body and MAP sensor off of his vectra and fit them to my astra. immediately all fault codes disappeared and the car ran perfectly. so i replaced his throttle body with my newer item and it continued to work without fault so it must be the MAP sensor.
when the car had just ignition on idle my MAP sensor showed a ridiculously low voltage (well below 0.5 volts) whereas pottsey's shows nearly 5 volts. so it seems pretty conclusive that this is the problem and that the throttle body was in limp mode rather than faulty.
will order MAP sensor (anyone on here got a spare that works?) and hopefully that will be the end of it. will let you know.
thanks again to pottsey for really helping me out today.
