Failed mot today....

Well I have had my car a few months now and it's due it's mot. Took it into Evans Halshaw at Gateshead like most my cars I have had. My car has full service history but the last 2 stamps are from a porsche garage :crazy: . So at the same time I told them to give it a service with engine flush and brake fluid change. They did that then phoned me to say it had failed it's mot. It failed on handbrake cable sticking, not that I have notice this happening at all, and some sort of a filter for the washers for the screen :crazy: . I have not got a clue what he means by filter for the screen, or washers as they worked ok as well. Anyway price is just over £400

Filter for the washers? There is an inline filter from the washer bottle. Are the washer jets working OK?

On my MK4 the filter is a little piece of rubber where the motor sits in the washer bottle. 10 min job to clean plus refill. Is the MK5 the same?

Yes they worked fine. Last time I used them was on Sunday. When they tried today they must have been frozen or something lol

They have probably blown the 10amp fuse then! 20p to fix that

Like you say 15 minute job to clean the washer filter and it would only need it if it gunked up, why would you replace it as if the gauze was broke it would still allow water to flow freely :problem:

I have left it with them, they did not have any parts in til tomorrow. I just told them to get on with it. I want the mot done with it already being at Vauxhall

How much should a service cost nower days? I know it's had extra done is the engine flush and brake fluid changed. They did say on the phone they won't charge me for the brake fluid changed now. Price is still just over £400 for the service and mot

brake cable is cheap as they are usually 3 separate parts and about 20-30 mins labour tops with a ramp

screen wash filter is BS imo - just take em out

service with big boys is over a 100 quid so depends if you want a service stamp then it will cost more

mot is 55 quid

i reckon your paying 200 quid to fix MOT failures imo

but if you can afford 400 quid on a mot & service then you got the wrong car - you should be driving a BMW or Audi

They are robbing you Mark. I'd not get VX to service my car, that's why I'd rather drive to Norfolk and have Neil do it.

After mine had hit 3yrs old all servicing is done with a independant garage i can trust, he even lets me buy the items if i want and he fits.

Last service, MOT, and other work cost just under £200 that included oil / filter / full checkup / MOT/ removal of seized locking nuts / brake fluid change/ and two tyres fitted (I did provide the tyres).

Engine Flush (Fortron) -
Petrol Ingection Cleaner - £25 for those

New washer pump - £35

Carry out 5th annual service - £83.56
Carry out class 4 MOT - £27.00
Replace Handbrake Cables - £70.00

Filter Oil - £3.51
O-Ring - £0.23p
Castrol Oil - £52.50 (Wtf, just noticed this)
Brake Cable - £35.00
Brake Fluid - £6.35

Subtotal - £338.67
Tax - £62.33
Total - £401.00

Jesus Mark, that's scandalous really it is. Do you have to get the car serviced from them to keep your warranty in tact?

My car does not have any warranty left on it. All costs are down to me now. That Castrol oil is dear stuff to buy, just been looking at the prices for them. That's the first time Vauxhall have ever used Castrol oil on my cars. They normally use the standard vx oil.

When i took out the warranty on my corsa C 3 years ago that was the best thing i did, it paid for itself over and over. To be fair i did rag the fuck out of it everywhere i bet Vx loved me :lol:
And for oil im really surprised at that too, Vauxhall rave on about how the GM stuff is the best for their product..... :think:

Least you've got some decent oil in your machine now for the time being.

so they charged you about 180 quid labour for brake cable, washer pump & service

washer pump is simple - u just pull it out take out filter and push it back in - but did they use a new seal ?
[hardest part is removing inner wing cover]

so i would ask if they used a new seal as they tend to harden and corrode and if they didn't ask em to fit one ! as they cost peanuts for the sake of leaking washer fluid

for the hand brake cable did they replace all 3 sections - 1 cable from lever to junction nxt to centre section flange then cable to each hub

amount u paid i would want clarification

oooooo nakes me cringe :crazy:

some things i would accept like handbrake cables because without a ramp its a lot harder fitting, but to pay DOUBLE what Halfords charge for some oil :wtf:

and the bloody VAT dont help matters.......
