What make the z22se so underpowered?

Agressive cams! WTF it has continuously adjustable intake and outlet camshafts which means they can be mild at idel and run large overlap at high revs. It also has direct injection and 1:12 compresion ratio.

The z22se was designed to have good low down torque at the expense of outright power somthing it achieves well with 155 lbft with none of the complex variable valve timing that most modern engines have. That the same as the afore mentioned BMW has with all it complexity and modern technology.

Maybe sophisticated might be the better word for the 320's cams, not aggressive IMO, when compared to the Civic Type R's Cliosport 197 etc. But that's just opinion. Cant argue about the low down torque, i like it alot especially when you have a car full and can gracefully climbs hills. :thumbup:

I agree,

very mild 244 degree cams
restrictive shaped valves (but so are all mass produced engines)
very small exhaust ports
totally restrictive exhaust manifold
restricted inlet manifold
small throttle body
useless inlet pipework
low compression pistons
balancer shafts
heavy flywheel
emission friendly map on the ecu

it's a miracle the engine produces so little or is it a sign of a powerful engine heavily restricted dunno..

if you remove the restirctions listed above you will achieve over 200 bhp and with throttle bodies one engine has made 235 bhp 😃

A port polish might be ideal aswell, but i reckon thats a tad pricey for the gain.

Exactly that,
It may be heavily "underpowered" by some standards, but the real fact is that it actually has very good specific torque...
Again it is a simple design choice, it was designed for low end torque so it was designed using long stroke.

So ok it is far from making the 2.0l 200 bhp a Honda K20 does... but show a K20 the torque curve of a z22se and there's nothing to be shy of...
