Replacing Z22SE Cylinder Head - A Post for Help Please

Q's 5 & 6 are sorted - read in another post that the seal just pushes out and a smear of lithium will be fine
Q 3 is nearly sorted, engine mount needs to be removed and the engine supported - having not done this before, can someone help with how to support the engine 😃

trolley jack under the sump (sump is a Stressed member) to support mass of engine only! remove engine mount completely now you can lower or raise to gain access or clearance for all fasteners that need to be removed

Your head is now ready I can deliver early (from tomorrow) if it assists you

i bought it a while ago, its was a company called virgin auto parts, i paid 41.50 for full gasket set, my old 1 looks like it as a sealant round it, but this new 1 is all metal.

I'm picking the new one up tomorrow and the old one is trashed - can go pull it out of the dumpster if you need it?

Another good night tonight. Head off the car and has the fuel rail, intake plenum and exhaust manifold off. Don't know why but I had prepared for this to be harder than it was. Cam sprockets came of with a bit of effort and head bolts undone outside in clockwise at 1/4 turn round once then 1/2 turn then out. Don't think this makes bugger all difference as the head is scrap but I do not know any different :wtf:

Pulled the thermostat out whilst I was there and will pick another up form Vx tomorrow - unsure if its had it but when driving home, it was sitting just above 80degC would expect this to average 90degC so can only suspect stat has failed slightly open. Evidence of more slight soapy white coolant in there - conclude I'll run it for a week or so then do a full change

Cleaned the throttle body up so its very clean - finished it off with some thin gear oil in the flange, all excess wiped out

Pulled oil filter and ditched all the oil - some one needs a lesson in torque. I dont profess to be a mechanic, more a gifted amateur however it was full on crap when it took 2 hands and a 1/2inch extension wrench to crack the sump bolt :silent: seriously was wondering if I was going to uncover another problem but alls good and its back on a 25nm. My guess, the same person that crammed the spark plug in and cracked the head. The more I pull it to bits, the more I feel sad for the car - everything is in excellent condition showing no signs of wear at all. Air filter, pollen filter and oil were almost new

I've also been lucky enough to book myself an appointment with The Dr for Friday - I'm better at making food and drink that fixing cars so I'll be the handbag

I've also got a cam locking kit coming tomorrow - thought that way there can be no doubt after 720degree turn, if the locking kit lines up after 720degrees were are in luck

Things left to do before I get some Vectra time

Replace thermostat
Replace cylinder head
Replace balancer chain
Replace cam chain
Refit everything
Fresh oil
Fresh coolant
Turn key and crap pants

I'm done for the night now 🙂

Aircon has not had to be drained - its in the way a little but just have to be more careful.

Thanks for that - I pulled it out already :crazy: new one going in, bought it now :problem:

Ah, I have the new ones here no problems. Also have fuel filter and brake fluid to change, brake fluid looks overdue - got plenty of that and 5-30w fully synth Vx oil (ah another question :roll: )

The missus has a 2.2 vectra C SRI which runs 5-30w so I've got about 15litres of that and about 10lt of 10-40w. Seen several recommendations to run the Z22SE on 5-30w fully instead of 10-40w semi. Whats your thoughts on this?

Today picked up the head gasket kit and head bolts, surprised that there is no exhaust manifold to precat gasket, maybe its the norm and the previous one was in good condition anyway. They have also forgot to order the thermostat (or its on backorder) so I'll be pulling the old one from whatever bin its in to clean and reset then most prob get a credit from Vx

Highlight of the day was getting a new sump plug rubber washer 🙂

Tonight, start pulling things down to get access to the balancer chain and buy some food to keep The Dr. well fed tomorrow :thumbup:

Good luck with it mate, im changing the opposite to you, bottom end gone on mine, just stripped head off new engine its knackered, oil starvation to cam, worn all head out, but my head is in good condition so i will start rebuild next week. :thumbup:

1 more thing, take that engine mount completely out to do balancer chain, then remove the belt and tensioner, and you have full access to the balancer chain panal, best of luck.

Ah man, thats bad news but glad you are getting it sorted - sure your Astra will be great when you get it sorted... Whats your thoughts on time to change the balancer chain for someone thats not done it before. Thinking

Support engine
Remove engine mount
Remove aux belt/tensioner
Remove cover
Remove tensioner, guides, chain
Refit guides, tensioner, chain
Clean and fit new crank seal/cover seals
Refit

you will have to lower or raise the engine to remove the water pump bolt which passes through the oil pump, it's quite easy to do - just fiddly

ps: don't forget to undo the crank bolt before removing the engine mount, it will be tight :wtf:

Money shot there vocky, was thinking the first thing I will do is get rid of that bracket :crazy: - thanks for that 8)

Is the procedure for it road wheels on the ground, vehicle in gear then get the biggest bar possible on there? Thanks
