Oh....no matter what a computer software fault, will it boot from a disc such as a new windows 7 and completely overwrite it or could it be bad enough not to even accept the disc....if it was ok would it be back to like having a new computer.

Yeah, it will boot from a CD/DVD regardless of the state of the OS, because you can tell the PC which order to boot from. Mine is set to boot from the HDD first, but when I re-install the OS, I change the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive first, so it reads the bootable install disc first.
Also, what does he use the laptop for? Just general web/documents stuff, or gaming?
Could always install Ubuntu onto it which is free.
