noise at start up

My 2.2 petrol vectra was runing fine, garaged it one night - next day turned the key and a terrible noise at start up - tapping and decreases in volume as the engine gets warm, the engine sounded as rough as a bag of spanners, sounded like was over reving, increasing in revs slightly between gear changes and reduced power.

Checked out a few posts and did some research and think that a visit to Benny might be on the cards or attempt the chain myself, before I do that I want to be certain before I part with the cash -times are hard.

Here is what Ive doen so far...

Removed and cleaned EGR valve - sooted up a little
Removed and cleaned throttle housing - dirty and gunked
Changed oil & filter

The car runs much better - but, the noise is still there... any ideas?

Sorry to say but it sounds like the chain is rattling. Try removing the cam cover and see if the chain has gone slack. Only a 10/15 minute job to wip the cam cover off and have a look, but you may be right to think about making an appointment to see Benny.

What mileage has the car covered?

The oil and filter change made a remarkable difference - I was thinking it was electrical as I had a beeping noise in the passanger compartment NS front and seemed to be linked to throttle when cruising on Mways - that noise has now gone.

I dont have a light on the dash.

Milage is 59k and have full service record along with the dealer stamp for the oil feed to the chain being changed - could it be the cam sensor (seem to be getting mixed message if they have one).

No cam sensors on these cars. Might be worth returning to the dealer if the chain has already been changed?? Could be a tensioner failure?

Does the stamp in the book regarding the oil jet mean that it was just the oil jet changed or the whole timing chain kit as the whole thing should be changed and not just the jet?

I seem to remember years ago reading on this forum that someone had history of the jet being changed but upon inspection it was still running on the old style oil jet.

Looked at the service history and it has stamped by main dealer - recall work at 4k miles - the guy I got the car from said that this was timing belt stuff.. probably a lie now...

Does Vauxhall replace if not done?

No. It was NEVER a recall.

You could try a chap called appy on VVOC? Not sure where he's based in the country. If you are trailering then there's Daz in Newport, South Wales??

had a look and no joy... getting a call on monday from MotorTek in Doncaster.

I am tempted to give it a go myself if I can find a step by step guide somewhere....

I am convinced that I have more than one issue - the timing chain is being investigated and possibly next week.

When I changed the oil filter and oil, I took the opportunity to clean the EGR, throttle body (couldnt find the breather hole tho), plus cleaned the pipes that I had disconnected to get at the throttle.

What would the symptoms be if the throttle control valve was not working?

I also want to clean the breather pipes as suggested in the forums - but want to make sure I do the right ones - does anyone have any advice on location?

Symptoms are grrrring above 2k revs (this had gone when filter changed) and now returned - I did take the ignition module off to have a look in the plug wells - the electical connector I couldnt get off.

The engine is running cold - but if left to idle does reach temp - fan comes on - drive away and drops back to cold?

if by throttle control valve you mean the idle air control valve the z22se doesnt have one, the ecu opens the butterfly to adapt.

Took the TB off and left it connected (Only me there), positioned it and switched ignition on - opens and closes fine.

Cleaned breathers that connects to the body of the unit.

Checked plugs - no sign of any oiling - suprised how clean actually.

The last post is very similar to my symptoms although I do notice a variation in the spongieness of the brake pedal, is it possible that wherever the crank case breather pipe is blocked or another blockage or sensor somewhere effecting the vacum?

Located the thermostat housing so will get the thermo changed at the weekend.

do you have a mate available so you can rev the engine while someone listens for sucking/whistling? if you had a large enough leak to cause problems you may be able to hear it.

Next step in the saga...

Having read the threads I replaced the CTS and have a new thermostat coming tomorrow so that will sort the temp out.

Plugs have been pulled and all ok there.

I have had someone sit in the car and rev to 1500 and then idle... there is a hissing sound coming from around the power steering fluid holder, when the engine decelerates the engine hunts and the hissing noise increases slightly then steadies off... there is a hose connected to the block on the right side with a yellow connector and hose leading to a NRV and servo, whats the likely cause of the hissing?

I am contemplating a complete engine flush rather than just the additive - with another filter and 5-30w fully synthetic?

Help still appreciated.
