how to check timing

hi guys how do i go about checking to see if my timing has jumped a tooth got a lumpy engine and a few ppl keep saying whip the cam cover over and check timing just dont understand were to line the makes on the cam cogs to say yup thats in time or yup thats outta time. thanks

it looks ok to me mate but then again im no expert and ill only know the correct timing because of the markings on the new chain kit

so if chain look ok then am screwed its my piston rings an no easy way of doing it grrrrrrrr

To check the timing properly you need to set the crank to tdc then use a tool wich locates in the holes on the cam sprockets.

There about 50quid. Vaux tool part number is KM-6148. and i think some other companys like sykes and pickvant and sealey do them.

It would be easyer if you had a newer chain that way you could reset the timing with the coloured marks and check for an improvement.

I dont think the original chains have timing marks on them?

just dont wonna change the chain and it be pistons caue it means i have to do it all again lol

someone on here was asking about the number of chain links between the timing marks on the cam gears you could maybe count them??

remove number one spark plug put in a rod/ screew driver turn the engine over BY HAND until the screew drive / rod is at it's highest point and then count the links between the cams not 100% way to check but is the best way i can think off without as said buying the tool or a new chain?

so that would be the 11th pic down from the top that pic was taken with the screw drive at highest point

just counted them and you have 14 links between IINM? so it looks to be ok???

Thats some good info. I was under the impression that if you get the chain one tooth out on doing the timing youl hit a valve. thats not the case then if they can slip and still run.

That would make sense if you have low but even compression on all 4 cylinders. You wouldnt have even wear on all 4 piston rings.

but how do i change it the guide on total vauxhall aint 100 % as it says use a locking kit that u say dont need lol

the new chains come with coloured links

u line up the coloured links with the arrows on the two cam pulleys and crank pulley and bingo
