Need serious guidence!! Non starter!

I have a 2.2Sri Veccy 52 plate, had it 3 months after a nightmare with a 1.8 landrover, headgasket twice, another story,

All has been fine except for an intermittant power steering light, but no loss of power so suspect sensor/connector somewhere.

A week ago the weather was getting a bit cooler, round 2deg, made a 1mile journey from nearly cold, stopped to pick lad up and as pulled away in 1st the engine lost power with what seemed to be a backfire, but without the backfire.. just the preassure.

After getting a parking ticket as a result, got it home and made the usual checks, fuels ok, preassure at rail, sparks good and strong, plugs fine and in good condition. injectors i thought as couldnt smell much from the cylanders, so checked, 12v at all of them, couldnt measure switched neg, but then also thought all 4 wouldnt go at same time notsure.gif notsure.gif

time to consult the codes, this is what came back apart from the steering warning and an imobiliser warning i knew about because of a dodgy key some time back after throwing it at the missus.

P1613 i understand to be a comms fault with the Dash Interface Module?? not sure what or where it is, took some wild guesses
u2103 i understand to be a network code showing the CAN problem

Tried resetting all the codes to no avail.

Can anybody help please, i suspect this lack of comms to the DIM is whats making the injectors not fire, ive checked connections on the module at the front of the engine, 2 connectors, the one the injectors/air flow.... are connected to, has anybody had a similar problem?

Communication error between immobiliser control unit and engine control
unit.

Effect:
The engine telltale is triggered (flashing).
Approximately 5 s after ignition ON, the injection function is blocked and the fuel pump is switched off.

clear down the codes and see what reappears after trying to start her up

if p1613 re appears and the car is cranking over but not firing up then consider it an immobilizer issue

could be flat battery, could be chip / transponder / ecu problem

is it a Vectra C ?

The engine light dosnt flash though, is there any cause you know of, shorting maybe, or any suggestion for rectifying it??

after clering the codes same problem, it is a vec C, if it was the immobiliser would i not be getting sparks either, which i am

p1603 is an immobilizer fault

it is basically saying when u switch ignition on the fuel rail will pressurize then 5 seconds later it will cut off the fuel pump and stop your injectors pulsing

basic immobilizers i have found on some cars dont stop the fuel to the rail but will remove pressure so effectively they might fire up briefly and then cut out

get some petrol and chuck it in the cylinders [through spark plug holes and put plugs in] and try start her up, i bet you she will fire up and last a second or so

Ill try that in the morning thanks, if it is this, im presuming the chip in the key is a passive device and does not rely on the keys battery, and also the transponder is just behind the key barrel, could it be the transponder, or as the fault is saying there is a comms fault upstream of that and its the controller?

presumably also, the U fault is just showing the fact of the P fault?

CAN abbreviations

The immobiliser function is integral with the CIM.

As soon as the ignition key is inserted in the ignition lock, the CIM communicates with the transponder in the ignition key via the integral transponder antenna, and evaluates the transponder signal.

If the ignition key is recognised as valid, the identities of the IPC, BCM, DDM, REC and PDM control units are then checked. If they are recognised as valid components, the enabling process is continued in communication with the engine control unit. If, in a particular vehicle, this control unit is incorrectly programmed or not present, start is not enabled by the CIM.

With ignition ON, the ECM requests start enabling from the CIM. If enabling fails, the ignition key must be removed from the ignition lock in order to obtain a new enabling via the transponder with renewed recognition.

The conversion of analogue to digital signals is performed by the CIM.

The immobiliser symbol in the instrument is actuated if the transponder is not recognised or the identification of the control units is not OK.

With this new immobiliser generation, the engine will not start and the starter is not actuated if an incorrect key is used.

The transponder is now a component of the circuit board in the ignition key.

Programming protection is effected via the security code, as previously.

when u say the starter is not actuated... The car actually turns over, once it has stood for a couple of minutes since the last try it does seem to fire once, but only once, as though some petrol has leaked through, it does spark fine to.

I have had no immobiliser warning on the dash either, i dont think, what would it look like.. but thinking back also to when it happened, the car was actually running, if the imobiliser failed at the point the engin stopped, would the engine not have worked on until i turned it off and tried to start it again? Thats what happened when i broke the key a while back, i could hold the board to the key barrel while i started it, and then once started i could put the chip away for next time, the engine would still run

had a quick look on TIS

it is saying that if your key fob communicates with central locking and the battery is oki then it says

Communication error between the CIM and the engine control unit.
Effect:

Engine operation is impossible.
The Service Vehicle Soon (SVS) Pictograph flashes
Concerned Terminals:

Before programming the control unit, the diagnostic tester must receive the programming approval from TIS.

Before the first programming is called up after communication has been established, you must enter the security code. The security code protects the control unit from unauthorised access. The valid code number is printed in the car pass.

Ignition ON
Press corresponding key in the system main menu to call up Programming functions, select the desired test and confirm with ENTER . Follow the instructions in the diagnostic tester display.

and if that doesnt work then replace Control unit which is number 5 on that diagram which i think is integrated into your instrument panel

a quick search on google points towards the instrument panel m8

so based on that alone either it is your key fob chip or instrument panel or reprogramming

if u keep switching ignition on and off then your fuel pump will prime and pump fuel into the injectors forcing it into the cylinders
the car will then fire up briefly 🙂

the flashing light is your service interval light not your eml when u switch ignition on

you sure your power steering light is not the service interval light instead ?

have a look in your manual !

the steering light was a steering wheel, it hasnt been on for some time.

The images i have had up have been a spanner, and what seems to be a car with a spanner through it

but nothing ever seems to flash though, its just one of those pictogram things, and they never stay on any longer than a couple of seconds when u turn the ignition on

problem with canbus is when it goes wrong then it is designed to get expensive, antoher way of stealerships getting money off you

i know someone who's horn wouldnt work in a brand new Astra H, had the ecu replaced in the end after 4 separate visits to dealership, the horn kept on going dead a few days after each visit

it was the CIM causing the problems [can bus related]
