Electrician courses

I'm looking at retraing and becoming an electrcian now i have left the army. i was looking at a electrcian course that New Career Skills do. it takes a minimum of 14weeks and the qualifications i would get are:

Level 3 City & Guilds, in Service inspection and testing of electrical equipment(2377)
Level 3 City & Guilds, in te Requirments for electrical installations (2382)
EAL level 2 for Domestic electrical installers Part P compliant
Level 2 City & Guilds, in Fundamental Inspection and initial verifictaion.

Are these the right qualifications, is this the right way to go, It's half n half of practical and theory, any advise would be welcome...

i'd love to retrain and do somthing different myself but can't afford to take a pay cut while training so good luck mate.

just because you go on a 14 week course and get these qulifications it doesnt make you an electrician!
i have spent 3 years training and got my city and guilds 2330 level 2 and level 3!
you also need to do your nvq level 3 to get your hand skills
and your 17th editon wiring regulations and your 2391 city and guild test and inspection! which is a nvq 4 standard (degree)
all off this takes around 4 to 5 years and then you will be at jib (joint industry board) technician standard! that is a electrician

it is wrong that some one can do 14 week course and risk peoples life doing it the short route

moderated I'm not qualified but i do full house re-wires and so on then i have someone test and inspect and not once have i had a comeback and i basically learnt on the job with a electrical company before going it alone now i do maintenance

And to ward9352 if you feel that's the route do the 14week course and you will have a better chance getting employed and the company that employs you will more than likely send u on day release while being employed

u get unqualified doctors doing boob jobs, same with dentists but not with the boobs

your right martyn, u get intelligent enough people to learn as they go along without making fundamental errors

the reason why robbo brought it up in the first place is you do get complete c**nts who will blatantly lie about their qualifications and experience just to make money even if it means putting your health & safety at risk

indeed if you want to make that comment point it at those and not the people who intend to do a good job and safe. when i get electrical jobs that's the first thing i say is i ain't qualified however the certificate is in with the price which is a full safety check buy a full qualified person rant rant rant lol

I don't expect to be a fully qualified sparky after 14 weeks i expect to be able to get a job at an entry level and learn on the job over a several years. need a new career i workin as a part time sales assisant which doesn't pay enuf or satisfying enuf. I'm 24 n a apprentiship is abit too long n hard to get at that age.

m8 if you do you 14 week course u will get a job easy because the course will show the employer you are willing to learn and trust me its good money

i just think if your going to be doing a job that puts people lifes at risk then you should do the full training that many people do and not the 14 week short cut!
The dodgy plumber or kitchen fitter that does full domestic electrics should be shot itts not fair or right

How many none qualified mechanics on here have fitted breaks? How many time do u here om the news of people diein due to dodgy sparks? Now i class my self as a very good spark n ive had no trainin and all my work gets passed off so what backs ur comment up? Ile tel u the reason is because its easy money so they bring out these test that u have to pay loads for so the gready wankers get more n more money.

this course is to help kick start a new career to help me get in the trade as i have no real experiance, i'm 24 and i have to compete with 17 n 18 yr olds i need an edge.
i don't want to go in n do some cowboy work on some1s house n put ppl at risk.

I say go for it everyone has to start someware and it probably will take you a while to get there but when you do you'l be quids in. If everything you do from now until your qualified is checked an certified your not goin to be a risk to anyone. Its easy for people to say dont touch anythin until you know what your doing but how are you supost to learn otherwise! Go for it.

well thanks for all the positive comments, i have applied to lots n lots of jobs i'm gonna wait and c what the response is and if by the end of the month nothing has come good i'm going on the course.

good luck m8 that's how i did it anyway m8 when i left the army i didn't know anything then i joined an electrical firm as a labourer, then i got on the job training, now i work for my self doing everything. Electrics is simple m8 keep it neat and don't cut corners and all will be good.
