Balance Shaft Deletion - With Bushes or with Bearing?

Hi Guys,

I am going to remove the Balance Shaft, but i have few questions:

To stop the oil line with bushes what is their dimensions?
To stop the oil line with the rear rearing how to achieve this step?
Can i remove the balance shaft without taking down the engine?

Yes, i found a lot.
But my question is - does it really the rear bearing thing solves the rear oil line issue, and how hard is to be achieved?

I force the rear bearing back 7.5mm, does the job 🙂

but the balancer delete is an engine out job 🙁

Why does the engine need to come out?
Is the gearbox blocking the rear balance shaft bearings?

the balancer shafts 2198cc are on the o/s of the engine and the chassie is in the way on the astra so engine needs to be dropped out as teh shafts are quite long

But how do you get to the other set of bearings?
Does the gearbox need to come out?

well to take engine out u need to romver gear box.
but the rear bearing are at the back of the engine and need pushing back from the chain side with a long extension.
or you can buy the netural balancer shafts from the us then u dont need to push the bearing back and dont need to cut yours down.
nice and easy that way no hassle. in out done 😃

and Zafiraz22se is selling me a pair of balance shafts that i can butcher for bits 😃

I bought a spare block today (actually two.. and two heads hehe), so first chance I've had to look at a block properly.
The bearing in question appears to be in about the middle of the engine (not at the opposite end) which is what you might think..
With the crank and cradle off, then it will be quite easy to bash that bearing (and measure the displacement accurately)

My question is.. how do they install that bearing in the first place?

edit: oh and btw don't try to force them out with a screw driver because the end plates WILL break hehe. Best way to take them out is to grab the cog and use the play and the weight in the balance shaft to pull and push repeatedly (like tapping it out with a hammer but from the inside) and it'll slowly come out. The end plates are made of very brittle aluminium.. I'm glad I got two of em to make a new engine out of 🙂

obviously i'm new to this but totally killed my engine (con rod hanging thru sump bit of a give away lol) :o
so i'm taking it steady learnig as i go but want to do what i can myself and improve it when i rebuild it
never done owt this big but not in a rush and love tinkering...
be gentle i'm still learning some of the abreviations too :mrgreen:

The balencer shafts counter act the movement/vibration of the moving pistons, but the shafts are quite heavy and are "off centre" to produce same type of vibration but in oposition to the pistons and other moving components.
the engine has to use power to rotate the shafts. This power is released when you remove the shafts. Hth.

helps a lot, ive spent more or less last 2 days reading through loads of the threads
my heads spinning ... :crazy: ive been slowly stripping bits off the engine (no jack so its coming out in pieces lol )
there's just so much that needs doing christ i'm that new to full on engine work i carnt even get the rocker cover off :mrgreen:
trying to brake the seal i'm affraid i'll break the cover good job ive got plenty of time.
im pretty good normally with a bag of spanners :shh:

You won't break the cover unless it's the black plastic type? In wich case get a nice aluminium one off here or eBay. Just thoroughly check for missed bolts, it shouldn't be stuck too tightly.

I would love to have the time and money to take the vec off the road and have a play with it. Suppose my time will come,lol

the balancer shafts spin at twice engine speed, General Motors have stated they require 5 bhp to turn EACH, so thats a loss of 10 bhp, something they never mentioned was at what rpm that power loss was measured.

If you plan on building a high revving z22se then they MUST go, at 8000 rpm they would be spinning at 16000rpm :wtf:

Every engine I have worked on (out of the car) gets them removed :lol:

all the bolts are out just stuck down like glue is there a hidden release or sumat

I feel your pain fella, lost my job a few months back only just have two pennys to rub together.lol.
