more extreme than those :lol:

this vx220 has no heater, currently it is bypassed by just joining the two pipes together at the front, I will bypass the heater circuit on the engine, thus weight of extra coolant and excess pipework removed.

the now redundant alloy heater pipes will be used for the chargecooler system, this removes quite a bit of excess heavy chargecooler pipework and moves some weight across the car. Currently the chargecooler tank pipework was squashed between the bulkhead and sc, now it goes to the passenger side so that niggle will be gone (you can see the moved hose in the two pics above).

The head restraint brackets will be cut off the roll bar, this will remove more dead weight.

The alarm system is not complete but some parts are still fitted, these will be removed.

I will go through the entire car and see whats not required, prepare for more weight savings :lol:

many of his ideas have already been done, like gel battery, different exhaust, nitrons, wheels etc

the bonnet and bootlid have already been lightened, so I'm just going to carry on the theme of weight removal where possible, nothing that extreme 🙂

Another area for weight saving is to remove the galvanising on the rear subframe and powder coat instead. Looks better too! Something that Hoffmans do on the Lotus Trophey race cars.

Not the cheapest or easiest thing to do though....

The subframe was of mild amusement when it came back from powder coat. I had insisted that if we sand blasted back the galvanised layer, there was a couple of kilo's to be knocked off the weight of it. Even the lad who did the sand blasted commented that he thought it felt lighter afterwards. The scales don't lie though and the subframe went from 26.5kg all the way down to... 26kg. LOL.

it's quite hard to do with the inlet manifold in place, but very easy with the engine out :lol:

Looks scarily familiar and the thought of a suspension refresh is bringing me out in a cold sweat, all over again. What bushes are you replacing them with Neil? The hard core Nylatron option or something with a little more give in them? Elise Parts have just released a new set of upgraded bushes which look nice (and they're all two part bushes).

So, are you looking forward to some time upside down in the footwells to undo the rear bolts on the lower front wishbones? At least when I did mine, I had the space to open the doors fully. 😃

P.S. Elise Parts are also now doing their own wishbones for the VX as well, if you find any of the upper wishbones have been damaged. Much cheaper than Vauxhall prices and better built as well. thumbup

they are upgraded bushes, can't remember the make, but I believe they are from elise parts.

front footwell bolts....thats what kids are for :lol:

all the rear wishbones are straight, one has a small dink in it from hitting the rear subframe, but it will be fine 🙂

well it was dirty and needed a bit of attention and it's a vx220 and I quite like them and ....

some more update pics;

this is the modified gearbox breather, the pipe kept falling off so I removed the gear selector cover then drilled and tapped the hole before installing a proper pipe fitting - hopefully the pipe won't fall off again :thumbup:

I have tidied up the wiring loom, fitted clips to the oil cooler pipework, modified the charge cooler pipework and generally tidied everything up

now unless you know the vx220 quite well you won't spot whats missing in this pic, but quite a bit of weight removed with a grinder :wtf:

I thought the the gearbox breather would take 10 minutes, it took 3 hours 🙁

basically I had to remove the gear cables, remove the pin holding the gear selector on, remove the alloy cover, drill and tap the hole, fit the pipe fitting and finally put it all back together. Still it looks nice :lol:

I thought up that idea a few years ago when I considered fitting the sc conversion to my vx.

ps: the white pipe feeds air direct from the front crashbox into the cabin area - no heater box installed
