Hi guys, I have a few questions RE: standalone fitting to a 2.2 Astra. Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I’d wack them on the end of this one.
As I explained in another thread, I’m looking for tuning solutions for my engine. Remap is not an option, so I’ve been looking at piggyback systems. Although the search is not over for a suitable piggyback, I have met several dead-ends and obstacles while searching.
I have found some system that require a combination of the following; external crank trigger, change of ignition system, cable throttle.
Ok, not ideal, but not impossible either. When weighing up the required work, for the amount of tuning features of a piggyback, eg lack of ignition advance, some even require extra injectors for increased fuel, a standalone starts looking like more of a viable option.
Now the first and possibly easily answered (although I can’t seem to find the answers) questions I have are:
How does the factory computer react to being relieved of engine operations? I assume it cannot be removed altogether due to being linked to functions like immobiliser, instrument displays and powerstearing (possibly?) anything else?
So if it’s still there taking care of the less exciting tasks, will it chuck a spaz?
The other initial question I have is; does anyone know of a Z22SE Astra successfully running a piggyback or standalone. Everywhere I search (not just this forum) I can only find comments like “you can use xxx piggyback/standalone” but nobody that is actually using one.
I can find a handful of US L61’s using piggybacks, but they are few and far between, due to the popularity of HPTuners and the like.
I’m also aware of the VX220’s on this site using (or intending to) standalone. Please excuse my ignorance (I’ve never seen one), but I’m of the assumption they are somewhat lighter on the accessories than the Astra, and probably would not suffer the same issues (or have I got that wrong?)
There are a lot of options out there, but so far I haven’t found any that have been tried and tested with my intended application.
Any answers/information would be appreciated.
