power steering pump to camsafts on vectra sri 2001

please can you help. 6 weeks ago i bought my vecta sri 2.2, 51 plate. i have discovered they suffer with many faults. my husband has changed the timing chain, using this site, we have replaced the head and had it skimmed, we have put new timming chain kit on, and put it all back together come to fit the power steering pump back into the cam , and found out it will not fit, as the cam in the replacement head hasnt got a keyway for the pump to fit in. can anyone tell me what i can do. as the old head and cam had the the key way in the end , for the power steering pump to fit in. i still have have thew old cam but they are worn. could anything be done to this cam and would it fit on the new head. please accept my applogies if i have placed this in the wrong place. i am brand new to this

the vectra B has an unusual inlet cam, it has a hexagon drive machined into the end for the power steering pump.

the easiest way forward is to swap the inlet cam, if your husband doesn't want to re-time the engine he could get a cam locking tool, this then allows the cam to be removed without affecting the timing, plus it would only take about 45 minutes start to finish too.

tell him to be careful with the cam bearing cap bolts, they should be tightened to just 7 ft lb's, the bolts will snap if over tightened !

many t hanks for that, unfortunately the cam is too badly damaged to do that, will any 2.2 inlet cam be alright. so long as it has the hexagon end. where would we get the cam tool from, and are they expensive. many thanks helen.

there is a pair of vectra cams on ebay, not cheap at £100, but you need vectra cams as they are the only ones with the hex drive 🙁

your luck is in, I have just found an inlet cam which has the hex drive in my garage, yours for £30 posted :thumbup:

thanks very much for the offer, today we went and had our oringinal cam reworked. they charged me £10. kevin, my husband has put the engine back together. he has asked me to ask you, should the cam chain be very tight.,before kevin, started to do this engine , he had a full head of hair,lol.
i contacted vauxhall in braintree today, to try and get a new cam, and they quoted me £398 + vat. for the inlet cam only. yours should be worth a lot more than £30. at vauxhalls prices you should get nearly £200. when the car is finally started and i have had the brakes done, and an mot. i will put some photos of it on the site. many thanks again for your help. helen.

yes the chain should be quite tight, don't start the engine if he suspects a slack chain, it's best to remove the lower timing cover and see whats wrong

ps: you got a good deal with your cam, a very good result 🙂

hello there, kev has got the car all back together, at last. when he went to re-start it, it makes a buzzing sound . he thinks its coming from the injector rail. can you help. ps the battery is flat. could that be the problem.

Was is buzzing with just the ignition lights on or whilst the engine was running?

as soon as i went to start the car, the battery was flat and it started to make a loud buzzing sound from the injector rail. is it due to the battery being flat.and the light were definately off. i never got the car started, i am going to jump start the car tommorrow. and i only finished at 10 tonight. cheers kev.

Possibly the fuel rail trying to pressurize but not having enough juice in the battery? I've had a problem for a while now with my battery going flat and when I turn the key there's a buzzing from the engine. At that point I know that i'm buggered and I have to ride my moped to work!

my vectra WORKS.

:thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: MY CAR NOW WORKS....... kev got it started this afternoon.i now know why the power steering pump seems loud. it is. he has got to do the front brake discs, this weekend. and put on my new brake pads. the only other thing, the mot has run out, so it will be done next week.
there is a slight noise from the cam chain, will it settle down. also do you have to retighten the head after so many miles. the haynes i have doesnt say so. kev seems to think you may have to, as you used to have to do this , on a lot of the eightys cars. and if so what is the final torque settings.

Has the buzzing stopped?

yes , as soon as the battery had a bit of life in it, kev turned the ignition key, no buzzing, and started on the first turn of the key. it seems that the battery had enough power to draw , the petrol up to the pump. the only other thing i noticed, the display unit , said the date 1, 11,1997. then when we went to restart the engine, after a few minutes. it has come up safe. not too sure what to do. will this right it self or do i have to fiddle with the little clock button and the button, next to it. i am not very good at this sort of thing. is there a how to guide, on the website.
ps last night i ordered a couple of the car stickers. i will look like a girl racer.
KEVIN IS A HAPPY BOY, HE WILL BE ABLE TO FINALLY GET HIS 3.5 MONSTER PAJERO, IN THE LOCK UP. HIS PAJERO IS VERY SHINY LOADS OF STAINLESS STEEL. THIS MONSTER 4X4 HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD. IT IS DIRTY AT THE MOMENT AFTER BEING OUTSIDE FOR 3 WEEKS.. 😃 😃 😃

the display might need a tech2 to reset it, but try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes first

ok will try that, kev is now doing the front brakes. i saw the discs eariler. they had no pads left, and the discs had a lip around the edge. it has took him over an hour just to get the disc off, it was nearly ceased on. when we bought this car, it came with a full service history. some of it was done by vauxhall. kev has took photos to document the repair history. still when its done, i will have a good reliable car and i know the work has acuatley been done.

my fuel pump has been quite noisy when switching the igntion on - i know the battery aint brilliant

i might try charging the battery up - it looks like the original battery that came off the production line - 6 years old now

the little green light is very dim 🙁
