new noise after engine rebuild

I've got a tapping noise after the engine was rebuild which seems to happen at idle but very low noise and loud at 2000rpm-3000+rpm at different points of throttle. When its light I'll try doing a video. But when I've been to a garage they pointed at the pistons saying it could be that rattling even tho its been rebuild.

New chains top and bottom
Recon pistons
3 old con rods with new one
new bearings
new crankshaft
Recon head

Anyone else had a problem the same? I'll update what happens to my car incase this could help others.

why was the engine rebuilt? could be a number of things, timing out, stuck valve lifters, piston slap, stuck chain tensioners.

Piston one was starved of oil and the bearing went to nothing if you look for other posts of mine you'll see all the photos of my engine in bits before and after.

I've been to 4 garages and vauxhall ones and no one knows where it could be I'll have to start taking things off to check everything. The bottom end was done by a engine shop with good rep plus I've lost no power that I can see.

looked at your photos and the engine looked in a right state! serious lack of servicing in its life for that amount of carbon build up every where. i would be striping the engine down again and checking everything again, just because a machine shop has a good reputation doesnt mean they never make mistakes! i had an engine rebored and it was done 0.12mm over size as i didnt check it before i ran it it destroyed the pistons had a nasty ticking that came and when with engine rpm and temp.

Try finding something you can put on the engine to listen to it.
Seen a few like this on telly but can't remember what they used.
Like a stethoscope in hospital. Put it onto certain points of engine closet to where parts are (pistons/chain/cams) and see if anything stands out more.
Not sure if it's possible.
U never know, it might not be anything or it might not cause a problem. Then again you may not see a problem till it goes bang.
Mine since rebuild keeps having other parts I did not do go faulty due to age or being taken off and put back. Sods law really

I've taken the side off and there is movement in the exhaust balance shaft that seems to knock like metal to metal even with pushing it with my hand up and down, so I'm thinking its that, or the tensioner not working right but i dont think its the tensioner.

And they had the pistons when it was rebuilt so they added new crank and put everything back in and tested it and it looked good when we got it and looked alright nothing out of place

To look at the exhaust balance shaft sprocket looks old and worn compared with the other one maybe the bearing is worn and that is why the shaft has movement or possibly the sprocket needs replacing

if you have play in the balancer shafts i'd say thats where the noise is coming from, you shouldnt be able to feel the end float (in -out movement) by hand. and there shouldnt be any up/down/ side to side movement at all. just spin freely nice and smooth.

well we looked at the balance shafts sprockets and they had no wear and both in and out has movement. we checked timing and everything else and started it up and still same noise. maybe engine out job but i've done a video and uploading it to youtube now

from the video i would say you have chain troubles and something else wrong like big end or little end problems. sounds like a diesel. but that might just be the videos sound?

just with the bearings been new and new crankshaft i wouldnt of thought it could of been that but it maybe, i think i should just replace the tensioner first see what happens

do you have a borescope? or could you borrow one to have a look down the bores without removing the head? sort the tensioner first. see what happens. as i said it may just be the sound on the video making it worse?

Replaced tensioner still same problem its quiet till the engine gets warm, we'll be checking the head now I think because it could be a valve. Everything else is new, this problem is taking so much time to sort out. But its running on gas now so its saving me money every mile, 75p a litre :)
